Panasonic Officially Announced that It will Mass-Produce 4680 Lithium Batteries

On September 9, Panasonic Energy is ready to start mass production of 4680 cylindrical automotive lithium batteries.

Panasonic officials said that the company has completed the mass production preparations for 4680 cylindrical automotive lithium-ion batteries, marking a "highly anticipated industry breakthrough." The company has also transformed its Wakayama plant in western Japan, which will become the mother plant for the new battery. Panasonic held an opening ceremony today to commemorate the moment and will start mass production after final evaluation.

According to the announcement, 4680 is a cylindrical lithium-ion battery format for electric vehicles (EVs) that is a significant improvement over the traditional 2170 battery. These new batteries have five times the capacity of 2170 batteries, which not only extend the driving range of electric vehicles, but also reduce the number of batteries required for the same battery pack capacity, improve battery pack assembly efficiency, and reduce the cost of electric vehicles.

Panasonic revealed that by March 2025, it is expected that about 400 employees will be involved in the development and production of next-generation batteries at the Wakayama plant.
