Panacea Pour l’ame Series, ~ Portals Subseries (Work XXX)
Today's featured artwork is from my Panacea Pour l’ame Linear-Geometric Advanced Color Field Series. This particular piece is from the "Portals Sub-Series of the PP line," and is entitled work number 30.
This work is classified as a "Linear-Geometric Advanced Color Field Abstraction." It was created using acrylics and mixed media on a 20x30" canvas. One interesting note on this painting, which is consistent with all of my Advanced Color Field works for that matter, is that no brushes are used in their creation. This entire line of work is created using only palette knives and blade tools. The extra relief and 3D effects you get when using this method of painting is very noticeable when viewing the work up close and in person.
We take will take a break this week from my last several newsletters regarding my current exhibit on "Abstract Expressive Art." This show will be running through March, 2017 at my brick and mortar modern art gallery in downtown Greenville, SC. This exhibit represents over 20 new works of mine based on "Abstract Expressionism," or as many know it, - "Pure Art."
Today, we will embark down the road of another modern style I work in, that being the art known as "Color Field Painting." As most of my patrons (and newsletter followers) know at this point, it is my artistic goal within my Panacea Pour l’ame Color Field Series to "Bridge the Gap" between "Classic Color Field Painting" and "Linear-Geometric Abstraction." This series contains to date now over 40 works. The pieces within this series range from Classic (static) Color Fields, to Linear-Geometric Advanced (non-static) Color Fields. If you review this series you will see the progression in the works going through; Classic Soft, Medium, and Hard Edged CFP. These classic style works are then more static, and low energy. The series evolves towards Linear-Geometric Abstraction through increased energy (non-static) elements introduced into the works. Thus, - I term entirety of the PP Series as "Linear-Geometric Advanced Color Field Paintings."
Going back in time a moment, let's revisit the essence of "Color Field Painting," This an art movement which began in the mid 1900's:
"Color Field painting" is a genre of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. It was inspired by European Modernism and closely related to Abstract Expressionism, while many of its notable early proponents were among the pioneering Abstract Expressionists. Color Field is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread across or stained into the canvas creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat picture plane. The movement places less emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes and action in favor of an overall consistency of form and process. In color field painting "color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself."
Some notable artists of thisfield of work include: Mark Rothko, Hans Hoffman, Helen Frankenthaler, Josef Albers, Robert Motherwell, Ellsworth Kelly, and Clyfford Still, ..but to name a few.
As I mention above, my series of Linear-Geometric Advanced CFP's have maintained the founding principles of Color Field Painting from the 40's & 50's, but introduce many new twists and variations. I have introduced multiple non-static energy enhancements to renew the style, making this work fresh and transformed. In all of my Linear-Geometric Advanced CFP's, I have implemented calculated linear-geometric inclusions that now gives this art new and expanded energies, and as well more varied and interesting take-away's in viewing.
In my more recent and energy advanced CF paintings, I have calculated and then instituted a host of Linear-Geometric imagery and 3D elements. For many, this effort adds a greater dynamic to the work, - giving the viewer more intellectual pleasure and levels of contemplation.
Static vs Non-Static:
By introducing "static" and/or "non-static" components to these color field works, I now have the ability to alter and control the viewing experience. To that end, I control the intellectual and emotional take-away from the art as well. Static color field art makes you focus 100% of your energy on the fields of color themselves as they are the sole subject matter of the work. No additional movement in the painting equates to zero distraction from that focus.
Non-static or linear-dynamic work on the other hand, gives you the viewer not only subjective color fields, but additionally injects specifically and carefully designed energies and imagery. This can completely alter your mental and emotional processing when viewing the art, and these pieces are seen then quite differently. Linear dynamic work tends to challenge your senses, and energize, - rather than relax them (re: static work).
Over the past 5-8 years, I have been able to create many Linear-Geometric CFP paintings. In addition to my strict historical goals with this PP CFP art line, I have also tried to give my patrons a multitude of options as to the "Visual Takeaway" of the work, - all within the same line.
Today's Piece:
The featured work, Panacea Pour l’ame Series # XXX, is a higher energy multidimensional piece. Though is does offer both elements of "static and non-static," this piece speaks far more of high energy and of the linear-geometric design elements.
Within the entirety of the work are defined field-subjective linear planes and implied geometries. The amount and detail of these inclusions make you focus primarily on them. In addition to that, there is a specific pigment blending and bleeding used to create an overall impact and work balance. Everything you see and feel is by design.
The Portal Series Concept:
Within each painting of these PP-CFP "Portal Subseries" paintings is contained a solid geometric block or shape. As well within all, there is maintained a constructed grid-work (or ladder) connected to the block. This ladder was built into these paintings as the connection or access conduit to the portal. In essence, - it allows the viewer to escape the painting thus by entering into an alternate intellectual and emotional plane or state.
I have sold several of these works over the past few years, and I have a collector that now owns multiple "Portal" paintings. Other than the general viewing enjoyment of them, he uses them to help him relax, recalibrate, and relieve the stress of the day...
As a thinking artist, I derive great pleasure in creating works that offer a myriad of psychological and emotional values. If a viewer comes to one of my artworks with an open mind, - they will enjoy a plethora of intellectual and emotional possibilities.
I hope you have enjoyed your viewing and brief discussions on my CFP series "Panacea Pour l’ame - Portal Subseries." The artwork shown and discussed today was PP-PS artwork XXX.
