9 Nov: Indonesia palm oil upstream mechanisation. PalmTrack spoke to a plantation company that is 55% mechanised, with plans for 70% at the next stage. Also, a vendor reckons that Indonesia is more advanced in mechanisation than Malaysia.?We validated our prelim findings to be generally on track; so check out from our Oct postings, Q&A on mechanisation, our review of details from the Malaysia mechanisation census.
8 Nov: The happy mood of the palm-driven Malaysia rural economy.?This update looks at retrospective and current price trends, and what it means for farmer incomes and mood. In contrast to corporate planters, smallholders are relatively carefree on cost concerns. Malaysia has just started its two-week political campaign for its upcoming General Election on 19 Nov 2022. We also tap in on Johor and its youth issues, among the general feel-good of record earnings and smallholder wanting to pay back planting loans early. PS. Politics is also in the mind of Indonesia corporates, as its elections are coming in 2023, but there is concern about politicians targeting the oligarchy.

7 Nov: Talking points on Indonesia-EU palm oil issues, Part 1. Thanks to GAPKI IPOA for inviting me to be on a panel, that covered topics about the palm oil trade with the EU. It was a big conference with 1,500 delegates and the one main auditorium was pretty well attended across the two days. I looked into the question of "what Indonesia should do" by focusing on three practical can-dos. Also note the context of how the end-use market in the EU has shifted to energy and how Indonesia has out-competed others to lead in this end market.?In Part 1, EU (and other) compliance regulations on the rise, for more products (palm oil, you are not alone!). Voluntary era of sustainability / ESG shifts to the regulatory era. We also check out the latest take on China, India, EU import trends from the top presenters. ?
