Pakistan Day: Youm-e-Pakistan, Republic Day, 23rd March (1940)

What this day today, Youm-e-Pakisan - Republic Day, asks from us? Excitement and emotions were running high as the parade ceremony on PTV Home ended, followed by the heart-touching and reality bitten conversation of Amjad Aslam Amjad and mili naghmae.

I sat there in an awe and thought through all of it very hard: so much emotion and energy …. but all of it needs serious channeling and transformation into ‘passion’ and sensible ‘actions’ on the ground!

Our ‘values’ that got shattered over the last two centuries and those pieces gradually being lost while we continue to struggle b/w the western values and ‘our’ values and thinking… have to be reassembled! Only our values system and the goals that we share as a nation can help develop that ‘passion’. I always tell my younger ones and colleagues to follow their passion and ‘hosh’ instead of emotions and ‘josh’. Being ‘attached’ to your projects or study area and being emotional about these can only cloud our judgement and decision making, resulting in mistakes.

Today is that day when we as one-nation made a resolution, an ‘ehad’. Would that remain a nostalgic memory or a legendary romance…. What’s your resolution today to yourself, to your profession and to this country?

He is Fellow of the Geological Society London, Active member of AAPG and serving on its Grants-in-aid Committee.
