Pakistan Commences Two-Year Tenure as Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council

On January 1, 2025, Pakistan began its eighth tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2025-26 term. With Ambassador Munir Akram at the helm, the Pakistani delegation has committed to playing an "active and constructive" role in addressing pressing global challenges.

A Historic Opportunity

Pakistan’s election to the UNSC in June 2024 marked a significant achievement. Securing 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, far exceeding the required two-thirds majority of 124 votes, reflects the international community's trust in Pakistan’s ability to contribute effectively to global diplomacy.

This is the eighth time Pakistan has secured a seat on the prestigious 15-member council, highlighting its sustained commitment to international peace and security.

A Global Responsibility in Turbulent Times

Ambassador Akram, speaking to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), emphasized the importance of Pakistan's role during an era marked by geopolitical turbulence. Key challenges include:

Intense competition between major global powers.

Escalating conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

A growing and multifaceted global arms race.

“As a responsible State – the fifth largest by population – Pakistan will play an active and constructive role, in accordance with the UN Charter, to halt wars, promote the pacific settlement of disputes, and contain the negative impacts of global conflicts,” Akram stated.

Strategic Focus Areas

During its tenure, Pakistan’s strategic priorities in the UNSC will include:

  1. Conflict Resolution: Actively advocating for peaceful solutions in regions plagued by instability.
  2. Counter-Terrorism: Strengthening efforts to combat terrorism while respecting sovereignty and human rights.
  3. Climate Change and Security: Addressing the growing link between climate change and global security challenges.
  4. Humanitarian Support: Championing aid for regions affected by conflicts and natural disasters.

Pakistan’s Commitment to Diplomacy

Pakistan’s presence at the UNSC's iconic horseshoe table is an opportunity to amplify its voice on global issues, including Kashmir and Palestine, while advocating for multilateralism and equitable solutions to conflicts.

Looking Ahead

As Pakistan embarks on this critical journey, its proactive and principled approach will be instrumental in navigating the complexities of international diplomacy. Ambassador Akram’s statement, “Our presence will be felt in the Security Council,” underscores the determination of the Pakistani delegation to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security.
