Paintworks have 50 units or so and all of them have Canadian maple that was reclaimed from a sports hall that was taken up near by. The place we worked in was being used as an office space, and being a hardwood it had stood up to a lot of wear and tear but now needed a fresh new look. The office was about to have a new tenant so Saskia asked us to sand and lacquer the floor.
The floor had dulled over the 12 years and had lots of scratches from desks and chairs. Areas of lacquer had worn exposing the bare maple.
We started the restoration process and went through 4 grits (different sand paper) as the floor needed a heavy sand and there was a lot of ‘edging’ to do (this is simply sanding the edges of the floor with a smaller sander than our industrial strength sanders) so, on a boiling hot day we got to grips with it and the term ‘by the sweat of one’s brow’ took on a whole new meaning but it was eventually done!
We then finally put the primer coat on and found another little obstacle, The room had a lot of beams running through it and that makes it difficult to lacquer, as opposed to a square room that you can just walk straight down. We finally buffed back primer coat and applied two finish coats of lacquer in Bonakemi Matt.
Although Saskia wasn’t able to be there to see the finish we made a video diary for her to see the job through and she seemed very impressed with the service.
