Paint Sealants

I get asked quite a lot about paint sealants and what they are for so:

What are paint sealants?

Paint sealants at the most basic level are usually synthetic products designed to protect a car’s surface while an element of gloss (shine).

Modern sealants represent astounding advances in surface chemistry and usually include proprietary polymers that enhance performance, some are designed to protect a car for months, the more advanced ceramic or nano sealants can do this for a few years.

This is because the more advanced ceramic and nanocoatings are chemically engineered to bond to the surface of the car.

This means they will last much longer than a traditional wax while providing stronger protection against paint destroyers like sap, acid rain, bird poo, and UV rays.

As a great example of a paint sealant doing its job and beading, the pictures below were sent in this morning by Steve Hill our recent competition winner whose #VXR was completed yesterday.

The sealant used on his #VXR was Gtechniq Liquid Crystal V3 which is based monomolecular silicium (SI14) and designed to last up to eight months.

Ok, so what is beading?

You may have noticed on some cars water droplets settling in an unusual way on the paintwork, ok, that's providing it has been maintained and has some sort of coating or sealant.

This effect is known as beading, aside from looking seriously cool (well I think so) it also makes keeping your car clean and streak-free a whole lot easier.

Beading is essentially created by polymers that create very high surface tension, meaning water runs off the paint freely reducing streaking and tide marks that might have previously pooled on the paint surface.

So how does this help protect your paint and the value of your car, it simply means that any dirt and grime will also sit on this layer of polymers, meaning they cannot bond to the surface of your paint creating damage. It also reduces the need for hard scrubbing during the washing process which in turn minimises swirls.
