Apparently, I do NOT have the best fashion sense on the planet:

Also, as Gary Vaynerchuk once famously said, "Marketers ruin everything."

That applies to 1-on-1 LinkedIn messages as well.

In recent months, I've noticed LinkedIn engagement fall off a digital cliff inside my inbox.

Messages that used to generate dozens of replies now have me acting like this ...

The reason is simple - everyone is being?hammered?inside their LinkedIn inbox on a daily basis.

The "noise" on the platform is louder than ever.

You've Got Mail (Ugh!)

It's the same idea as email.

Once upon a time (aka the 1990s), we?loved?getting emails.

In fact, we even made a movie about it starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan:

Now, we look at our email inbox as a "chore" that includes "cleaning out" a flood of spammy messages and offers we didn't ask for.

However, that doesn't mean email still can't be an insanely effective marketing tool.

You just have to find a way to catapult yourself over the clutter to capture the attention of your prospects.

The same is true with 1-on-1 LinkedIn messages.

Making Your LinkedIn Messages Matter

I've been able to get my LinkedIn inbox back to pre- "marketers ruin everything" levels with a simple strategy - 1 sentence!

Here's a before/after example that centers around me offering prospects a free book:

BEFORE

Curious {{FIRST_NAME}} - are you looking for any free tips on how to find, engage and pre-qualify your ideal clients here on LinkedIn?

The reason I ask is, I recently published a new book - “LinkedIn Lead Generation For Business Coaches & Consultants!”

If you'd like to check it out, just reply YES or ?? and I can send you a free digital copy.

Or, if you're not interested / all set, no worries!

AFTER

Hey {{FIRST_NAME}} - want me to send you a free digital copy of my new book ?? "LinkedIn Lead Generation for Business Coaches & Consultants"?

or

Hey {{FIRST_NAME}} - can I send you my best free tips on how successful Business Coaches & Consultants are leveraging LinkedIn to land 5-6 figure clients?

I'd suggest two templates for your "1 sentence" LinkedIn message:

Template 1 - Ask a question: "Hey (First Name) - are you running into challenges right now around (pain points)?"

or

"Hey (First Name) - how are you dealing with (common industry-related pain points) right now?"

Template 2 - Offer something free: "Hey (First Name) - can I send you a free digital copy of my (eBook / Webinar / Podcast), "(Title of Content)"?

See how those go over for you with your next batch of 1-on-1 LinkedIn messages to prospects on the platform.

In fact, if you want bonus points, reply with your "1 sentence" LinkedIn message in the comments and let's see what you come up with!
