The pain of a stranger
It’s no secret, caregivers who work in care management have compassionate hearts and a drive to help those who may need a hand in a moment, or who have been through a trauma.??
That compassion and caring nature comes through in Eva Hobson, LCSW, and the work she does helping patients. Eva’s been in care management at Intermountain Health for three years and splits her time between Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado and Platte Valley Hospital in Brighton, Colorado. She’s been working in mental health for 10 years.
In her current role as a behavioral health lead, she evaluates patients who present in crisis or require behavioral health intervention. Eva has worked with several patients who have expressed suicide ideation or have attempted to take their own lives by suicide. After the patients arrive at the hospital and receive initial treatment, Eva spends some time assessing them to determine what resources are needed. As you can imagine, this is a traumatic situation for patients and families and calls for the kind, gentle nature Eva’s known for.
“I try to approach every patient with compassion and empathy,” said Hobson. “When people feel like they’ve lost control of all aspects of their life, suicide ideation gives them some sense of control. You often see people at their worst, and they are counting on you for help, resources, and support,” said Hobson.
When asked why she was called to this work she said a series of people she’d helped along the way led her to the mental health field. She comes from a family of medical professionals, and says she was bred to be a nurse, but decided on a different path after sitting by the side of a few patients and helping them through a tough situation.

She started her work in mental health helping patients who had been sexually assaulted and she also worked in a methadone clinic for a while. At one point she helped a woman who was going through a domestic violence situation, and it was then she knew she wanted to continue in this line of work.
“We’re in an opportune time with mental health being a priority in national conversations, to add the resources needed for all populations who may need help through life situations,” said Hobson.?
Eva’s favorite quote is “Anyone who willingly enters into the pain of a stranger is a truly remarkable person.” And in her own words, “This really sums up the evaluators here at Intermountain. They sit and listen to a person’s worst day or a string of worst days.”
