The Pact for the Future in Motion

Now that we are on our way to the Bureau we propose a reading that will help you to keep an eye on the conversations that took place at our Retreat in February to organize actions together to deploy our Pact for the Future and with another eye on the future to envision together what kind of territory we imagine and share visions at the Bureau.?

The Pact for the Future of Humanity, unanimously adopted by the UCLG World Congress in Daejeon, the Republic of Korea, in October 2022, outlines the collective commitment of the municipal movement towards a new cycle of multilateral processes and key decisions. It articulates the principles of the Power of We, which will guide the movement’s political direction towards the SDG Summit of 2023 and the United Nations Summit of the Future in 2024.

The Pact is a declaration deeply embedded in the complexity and urgency of the times. It is based on the reality that local and regional governments work daily, serving the people, caring for them, and ensuring service provision for everyone and in every place.

The Retreat showcased the strength of the feminist, human rights-based, green, peaceful, committed, and transformative global municipal movement. Participants worked together to unpack the Pact and propose high-impact partnerships, which marks the opening move of UCLG at the multilateral table in this crucial year of 2023. In addition, all these conversations that took place have to do with the Future of Vision exercises that we are holding during these weeks on the way to our Bureau, since it is from the meetings held at the Retreat that the key concepts that we are now discussing are coming out. UCLG's Future Envisioning Exercises, which serve as a means to unfold the Pact for the Future, have been initiated by the UCLG Policy Councils. They are a space of dialogue and co-creation in which the UCLG political leadership, together with organized civil society and partners articulated in the UCLG Town Halls will build bridges to unfold the Pact.?
