THE PACK LEADERSHIP MINDSET

A quest to understand how young leaders are shaping the future of organizations

The notion of individual leadership has never been questioned, but the meaning of leadership is in need of change. 

I believe it’s time to embrace a new era of leaders.

The disconnect between today’s corporate culture and how the world works has been on my mind for quite a while now. A sense of responsibility constantly provokes me and I’ve had a deep sense of urgency to usher in a new era of leadership, which I like to call, Pack Leadership.

After constantly thinking about this, I realized I wanted to get to the root of today’s leadership “problem” the best way I knew how. Research! In order to embark on this journey, I knew I would need to learn from the most inspiring leaders in the world.

So, I immersed myself in their minds and communities.

My goal was to better understand how we can properly prepare the future generation of leaders and knowledge workers. 

I used this quote from Arthur Schopenhauer as my inspiration:

“The task is, not so much to see what no one has seen yet; but to think what nobody has thought yet, about what everybody sees.”

My curiosity pushed me to uncover insights from a diverse group of leaders from all walks of life. What I came to find were some truly transformative ideas.

Here I’m going to share HOW I went about doing this research because there’s an art and science to getting good research done effectively. You can download the full research report to learn about all of my findings at the end of this post.

UNCOVERING INSIGHTS

The following are very important steps to help you implement the methodology I used. Feel free to use them as briefing material for your teams.

To do research effectively, you must approach each interview as your first conversation. This will help you avoid bias, stay on course, and find real insights. 

But, let’s first agree on the definition of an insight.

An insight is a hidden truth that can help you solve a problem. It all sounds simple, but everyone always asks, ‘how do I find this incredibly useful insight?’ 

I promise you the answer is simple and requires nothing more than common sense.

I have mapped out the three most important steps to set up your research.

As you continue to learn how to uncover meaningful insights, try using these guides I put together - they should help you through your research process. They are simple, yet powerful.

Now that you’ve mastered your interview skills, let’s move on to the most important part… 

PROFILING YOUR AUDIENCE

Identifying and mapping the participants is the single most important part of the research. The insights are a byproduct of your audience, so obsess over the profiling stage. It will pay off!

These are the criteria I used to guide our audience selection:

  • Equal gender representation: Accelerating equality is everyone’s responsibility
  • Diversity of thought, industry and backgrounds: Heterogeneous groups inspire
  • Global reach: A digital mindset has no borders, nor should our research
  • From C-level to aspiring leaders: Title is not everything, mindset is most important

FROM INSIGHTS TO IMPLICATIONS

When it comes to research and insights, it’s all about what you learn and how effective you are in driving change in the real world.

Once you have an insight, you should ask yourself, ‘What is this information telling me?’ For our research project, it was important for us to determine whether current leadership is effective and what needs are not being met.

When we have clarity on the implications of our insights we can develop solutions to problems. For us, this meant learning how to improve leadership principles. 

What we found through our research was both inspiring and eye-opening.

IT’S TIME TO SANCTION A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS

We currently live in a world where change occurs at the speed of light and people are hyper-connected. The notion of one person leading a team and everyone else executing feels outdated.

Shouldn’t the concept of leadership be refined to be more collaborative if it will ultimately result in more creativity and bring incremental value to organizations? To lead in a collaborative and transparent way means to lead as a pack. We believe this principle is the future of leadership.
