Pacific Leaders Collaborate on $100 Million Program for Ocean Management and Food Systems

A group of senior officials and experts from across the Pacific convened in Suva, Fiji, to co-design a transformative new program funded by a generous USD 100 million commitment from the Bezos Earth Fund. This groundbreaking initiative focuses on two key areas: 100% ocean management and sustainable food systems.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) is spearheading this co-design process, supported by various regional organizations. Among the distinguished participants were Ms. Saitofi Miika, Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Lands, and Agricultural Development (MELAD), and Mr. Riibeta Abeta, Secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource Development (MFMRD), who represented Kiribati's interests and perspectives.

This collaborative effort aims to implement comprehensive ocean management strategies and enhance food security throughout the Pacific region. The involvement of high-level officials and thought leaders underscores the program's potential to drive significant, positive change.

Kiribati extends its gratitude to Pacific Community-SPC and the organizers for their excellent coordination and execution of the meeting. The country's representatives are optimistic about the initiative's potential to foster sustainable development and resilience in the Pacific.

As the program moves forward, the collaborative efforts and innovative solutions developed in Suva are expected to pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the Pacific islands.

I hope you all bear in mind that the combined yearly government investment for coastal fisheries management of all the Pacific Island Countries is in the order of 5-10 million dollars. Almost all the coastal MPAs in the Pacific are managed by communities and fisheries departments who unanimously state that they are severely underfunded. So would it not make most sense for Mr Bezos to spend this money on doubling the national yearly budgets for coastal fisheries management?
