PACE Planning

Stoic Quote of the Week

Success comes to the lowly and to the poorly talented, but the special characteristic of a great person is to triumph over the disasters and panics of human life.

-Marcus Aurelius

What I learned this week:

I do most of my work from my home office. Sometimes, I like to get out and about and change the environment whether it is a call with a client or writing, just changing the situation that you are performing the same action in, changes the action. Because I like to bounce around like that, I’ve been a fan of cloud-based files, Google. Dropbox, Box are the ones I use. This technology allows me to grab my laptop and go and when I get there, I have the same access to the files I was working on in my office. Except when I don’t. When I don’t, then what? Nothing, panic, crisis! I can’t get that thing done I planned to get done and the whole plan falls apart, but it shouldn’t. It shouldn’t because I know better, but I don’t always follow my years of Green Beret training. That training taught me to always do pre-combat checks, check your gear to make sure it works like it is supposed to before you get into a situation where you need it and it doesn’t. That training also taught me PACE, primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency which means you have your primary plan or tool, but then you have 3 backups to it. That’s why we used to carry so many radios, batteries, and weapons and yes, we prechecked every one of them before an operation. I’m a few steps away from those days but those two processes still hold true to make sure you can succeed at what you are working on. Well, I didn’t this week. I didn’t do my checks on the computer, I didn’t have an A, C, or E in place. This led to a bit of panic and some quick thinking about what I could do as my unplanned emergency plan. Fortunately, a calmer mind finds an alternative and the problems resolved themselves. Be sure you do your pre-combat checks and have your PACE plans in place. You may never need them, but when you do, you’ll be thankful you did the pre-work.

Planning thought of the week:

If you have some tools and machinery that are critical to the successful execution of your plan, be sure to include some time for pre-operation checks and for doing operations maintenance. Our society has become so used to being throw-away-minded that we forget these critical steps and take the machine's performance for granted.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:

Have you ever thought about writing and getting paid to do it? I’m not talking about best-selling self-help books and novels. I’m talking about articles and blogs about things you know and are passionate about. Several periodical-type websites pay freelance writers for their articles. Huff Post is probably the most well-known and they pay ~$400 for a 1000 word article. If you want some additional info on this, here is the link to the article, 4 Websites That Pay Writers $200 to $400 per Article.

Veteran opportunity of the week:

Heroes Make America is a nonprofit VSO that connects veterans to the manufacturing industry. Their signature program provides integrated certification and career readiness for veterans of all services. You can find out more here.

Someone I met this week:

I finally had the opportunity to link up and talk with my new friend Sol. Sol is a branding and marketing expert who is from Argentina. She is passionate about helping women in tough situations like refugees or single moms through her marketing business. Her branding and team are growing all over the world which is an amazing testament to not only her talents in art but her leadership also.
