When you’re criticized do you start P’ing?
No, I’m not talking about that kind of P’ing.? I’m talking about the three P’s in your mind, that hold you back, when you receive criticism.
Here’s the typical mental thought process following criticism:
Why is this person saying this to me?? Is this Personal??
Does everyone think this about me? Is it Pervasive?
Am I doomed forever?? Is it Permanent??
P. P. P. ?Personal, Pervasive, and Permanent.
How we respond to criticism and bad news can significantly impact our careers and lives. The key is learning to reframe these seemingly negative experiences as opportunities for growth. Our goal is to turn these criticisms, which show up as negative thinking, into pathways for success.
Ryan Holiday quoted in the Obstacle is the Way says,
“Choose not to be harmed—and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed—and you haven’t been.”?
Instead of letting criticism or rejection set you back, let it propel you forward by reframing the message and asking yourself, How will this help me?
When you hear:
You’re not qualified for the job, or your company isn’t good enough, or your style of leadership is not what someone likes, you are hearing one person’s opinion. And it’s probably not:
Personally, about you.
Pervasive because not everyone feels that way.
And even if they may be correct in some way, it’s not Permanent. It’s simply another piece of information to get you closer to where you want to be in life.
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it; Get some criticism lately? Don’t start P’ing. Breathe and put what was said or done into the context of just another obstacle that will help get you to where you want to go. Then, thank the person for letting you know.? And now you can really mean it!
When I was young, I thought everything I said or did was viewed by everyone under a microscope. Now at 72, I realize that most people are busy thinking about what they’re going to have for lunch rather than being concerned about what I’m thinking or doing. And that’s just fine.
Learn the lesson of the three P’s early. Then, turn them into Positivity, Progress, and Possibilities.? Throw in Peace for good measure, because that’s what you will have.
