Climate change has challenged our ability to predict malaria transmission. Mozambique is one of many examples—the onset, duration, and magnitude of the malaria transmission season have changed, impacting the effectiveness of interventions. The government is now trialing an early warning system with the potential to prevent epidemics and save valuable resources by predicting future surges in malaria transmission and enabling targeted, timely response. Mozambique is still integrating the system into its existing malaria information system—though it's far too soon to evaluate full impacts, the system has the potential to predict outbreaks up to 8 weeks in advance. CHAI's Andrew Storey participated in a session exploring novel solutions to the growing health impacts of climate change at the recently ended #UNGA79 Science Summit. Andrew discussed the critical role of climate financing and the urgent need for integration within existing health systems. Using Uganda's Health-National Adaption Plan (H-NAP) as a case study, he demonstrated how countries can integrate climate resilience into health strategies. Learn more: https://ow.ly/2Gk050TFnih ??Here are some notes from his presentation: Emerging evidence highlights the escalating dangers climate change—especially extreme heat and air pollution—poses to pregnant women and newborns. In many of the high-burden countries where CHAI operates, this growing climate crisis is converging with stagnant maternal and neonatal health outcomes, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. ??CHAI is partnering with governments to drive resilience and adaptation strategies into maternal and newborn health services, creating powerful momentum and a model for global action. Key Insights: ??Integrate Climate and Health Investments: Strengthen existing health systems by linking investment and embedding climate adaptation strategies—avoiding siloed, short-term fixes. ??Government Leadership is Crucial: Ministries of Health must lead coordinated efforts to ensure long-term sustainability and meaningful impact. ??Leverage Proven Solutions: Integrated approaches are not only effective—they save lives. By aligning climate and health initiatives, we can build resilient, sustainable systems that protect the most vulnerable. Together, we have the power to change the future for mothers and newborns around the world. INFORM Africa Hub DS-I Africa #ClimateChange #ClimatexHealth #MaternalHealth #ChildHealth

Africa should be included in any expansion of the fight against cervical cancer, CHAI's Parth Bahuguna told The Lancet Oncology. 19 of the top 20 countries with the highest cervical cancer burden were in sub-Saharan Africa in 2018, according to WHO. “Most of our work is concentrated in Africa and while it’s heartening to see the collaboration for the Indo-Pacific region, we know there are several governments in Africa that are open to receiving support and that need financing to scale up their efforts”, he said. Read more about the Quad Cancer Moonshot Initiative announced by the US President Joe Biden and the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan. The initiative aims to reduce #CervicalCancer in the Indo–Pacific region by strengthening the overall cancer care ecosystem, including early screening and vaccinations against the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for most cervical cancer cases globally. ??https://ow.ly/HZ0R50TC5pg

On this #WorldOxygenDay, we recognize the importance of national oxygen strategies in ensuring equitable oxygen access. The Rwanda Ministry of Health, with support from CHAI and other partners, has launched its National Oxygen Strategy 2024-27. Over the last few years, the government of Rwanda has invested significantly on its medical oxygen infrastructure. Since 2021 at the height of the pandemic, it has: ?Increased its national oxygen production capacity from 1.2 to 7.2 million m3 annually ?Established 42 pressure swing adsorption plants across 29 hospitals nationwide ?Trained 1653 health workers nationally to identify and treat low blood oxygen levels With this new strategy in place, the government aims to increase the availability of oxygen further, by decentralizing care to bring medical oxygen closer to where communities live.
