Twenty years ago I decided to learn how to ski. I attended a couple of classes for beginners as one of a group of 10 inexperienced skiers. At some point, I was ready for a private lesson with an instructor in order to hone my skiing abilities to perfection. (Since I lived in Bavaria near the Alps at that time, knowing how to ski was obligatory). ;)
So there I was - excited to learn and get to the next level of mastering the skills of skiing… one-on-one with a professional!
We did an exercise on an easy hill and, right after that, the instructor took me to the most challenging slope in the area. I stood there… on top of the gigantic indomitable mountain with the steep slope spread out before my eyes and, let me tell you, I did NOT have a good feeling about this!
And, as if I didn’t feel anxious about this impending descent already, my instructor said to me:
“By the way, you will never be able to master skiing well enough to be able to ski down a hill like this all by yourself!“
I was speechless and taken aback. What drove this man to talk to me like that?
I didn’t have too much time to think about what had happened, as he gave me a hard push and my skis started moving toward the horrifying downward spiral.
Going downhill I did nothing but cry. Those were tears of disappointment, of being disappointed in my abilities. I was disappointed with my teacher and with my life.
At least that’s what I believed then… today I can finally share with you the reason why I was crying:
I had allowed someone else to tear away my personal power.
My teacher did not do it on purpose; it was ME who let him.
Did I stop skiing after that memorable day? No, I did not! That very same evening, I went down that hill on my own - and I succeeded!
A year later, I found myself back at the very same slope. This time I was alone and something was different - a new feeling, a new-found energy. I was a different person. The power was in ME now - 100%.
Once again, I made the descent and the tears flowed afresh. But this time they tasted sweet.
Have you ever tasted success? Have you ever experienced the savor of victory?
It is sweet.
When I arrived at the bottom of the hill, I was once again a new person!
I have tasted what it means to own my power… to live my life to the fullest. Was I proud of myself? You bet!
Now what about you, dear friend? How often do you have to face challenges in your life?
Do you master them from a place of power which resides within you?
From a place of deep believe in yourself and the power within you.
Believe me, no one and nothing can take away your personal power unless YOU let them.
Owning your personal power no matter what life dishes out is the foundation for you to live a fulfilled and happy life.
And it’s the life lesson that every one of you masters daily.
People managers and business leaders hire me when they need help communicating more clearly, making better decisions, & holding their teams accountable—without the stress & frustration.
