Owner Managed Enterprises - Strategic Legal Plan

Owner Managed Enterprises - Strategic Legal Plan

We are honoured and privileged to go into another year with our clients to be part of their business and outsourced legal team. We strive to be a forward-thinking legal firm that is dedicated to helping owner-managed enterprises (OMEs) sustainably grow their business to reach their dreams. We always aim to partner with OMEs to help them realise their business’s vision by applying our legal, governance, risk and compliance expertise to their overall business strategy.

Strategic Legal Plan

With a Legal Department Strategic Plan, our team can; accomplish meaningful improvements in the process; find operational adjustments that enhance service delivery; and demonstrate the value.

We want to proactively plan with OMEs, so you are far better positioned for your company to thrive in these exciting yet turbulent and highly competitive business environments.

Every Legal Department Strategic Plan must start by taking into account the long-term wants of the OMEs business, executives and teams. We inter alia take the following factors into consideration when compiling the OME’s Legal Department Strategic Plan:

Look at last year (& the last “typical” year too)

Where did your team struggle – workload, budget, personnel? What problems would you like to solve? Are there any activities worth repeating? In short, what worked and what did not? Our team and yours have access to Legal Department Intelligence software (used for the legal operations platform), so we can constantly view your data and dashboards.

Discussions with you

Through our regular interactions with our OMEs and their teams, we quickly ascertain the OME's concerns for the upcoming year – from product launches to regulatory changes to major deals. We identify where your team might need legal support and how our team can best anticipate and address these legal needs.

Continued personal interaction

It is said that “As a business attorney, we needed to make sure the legal goals line up with those of our client’s executives.” From time to time, we will talk with members of the Board of Directors and committees to identify what is important to understand and what the Board is concerned about heading into the year. If you do not have a Board, speak to us about the importance and benefits of having one and ensuring good governance.

Our team and processes

We continuously evaluate what business issues are piling up, what technology is and isn’t working and what changes we would recommend.

Goal orientated

In order to conduct our Legal Department Strategic Plan, it is essential that we understand;?“What are the company’s major goals for the year ahead?” These will be listed front and centre on our Legal Department’s strategic plan for your company. This will keep your team, and ours, aligned with the overarching objectives of the business, and it will put our legal work in the larger context.

We know that lawyers are cynical creatures, and you may feel the traditional mission and vision statement exercises are a little too close to navel-gazing for you. However, selecting a few major missions will provide a foundation for our Legal Department Strategic Plan and spark ideas for tactics and execution.

We have aligned our compelling major mission with ways in which outsourced legal delivers value:

  • Support business objectives;
  • Advise company leaders;
  • Manage legal risk;
  • Control legal spending;
  • Assist the compliance team with managing compliance.

We aim to incessantly think of quantifiable measures: legal spending, response time, cycle time, and the number of matters completed. In order to achieve the above, the following are our strategic objectives for your business:

  • Improve accuracy in the legal budget process;
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings;
  • Create or amend legal contracts and general policies;
  • Defend and protect the interests of the company — litigation, IP, government affairs, compliance;
  • Implement technology to automate traditionally manual workflows.

Implementation and measuring

For each of our strategic objectives, we write the tactics which need to be completed. These are the steps that will get us there. We believe that these are achievable, action-oriented and accountable, so you know who’s doing what and when.

Together, our team and your team will accomplish the Legal Department Strategic Plan (and adjust for the inevitable but unpredictable shifts in your company’s strategy and operations). This will be done by staying disciplined by planning accountability checks at regular intervals and sharing the results with you.

We have successfully assisted clients with Strategic Legal Plans and their implementation for over eight years, and we look forward to doing the same for you. Through this process, we have realised that if legal, risk, governance and compliance are used as tools as opposed to only seeing a lawyer when something has already gone wrong (reactive), it saves time, money, and frustration and supports growth.
