Own your Narrative: Overcoming the Fear of the Opinions of Others

Own your Narrative: Overcoming the Fear of the Opinions of Others

I always find it interesting when I work with my clients around their self worth, self perception and self esteem.?When it is based on the outside opinion, the way they see themselves?becomes conditional and their actions are always governed by what ‘others’ will think of them.?Seldom do they have a good opinion of themselves that comes from within.?

People often worry about what others think of them because they value social acceptance and approval. Human beings are social creatures, and being part of a community is a basic human need. Therefore, we tend to place great importance on our relationships with others, and we want to be perceived positively by those around us.

When we believe that others hold a negative opinion of us, we may feel ashamed, embarrassed, defensive or insecure. This can lead to anxiety and stress, which can ultimately impact our mental and emotional well-being. Conversely, when we believe that others view us positively, we may feel confident, happy, and validated.

Furthermore, societal norms and expectations also play a role in why people worry about what others think of them. We are often conditioned to believe that certain behaviours or traits are more socially acceptable than others, and we may feel pressure to conform to these expectations to avoid negative consequences such as rejection or criticism.

Overall, the need for social acceptance, the fear of rejection, and societal pressures can all contribute to why people worry about what others think of them. However, it's important to remember that we can't control what others think of us, it is not our business and ultimately, our own self-perception and self-worth are the most important and only factors in our happiness and well-being.

So what you do about this??Here are some tips:

  1. Identify the source of your worry: It's important to understand why you're worried about what others think of you. Is it because you want to please everyone? Or do you have a fear of being judged or rejected? By identifying the source of your worry, you can start to address the root cause.
  2. Define your values and goals: Knowing your values and goals can help you stay focused and confident in your decisions, regardless of what others may think. Take some time to reflect on what's most important to you and what you want to achieve in your business and stop caring about others may or may not think of you … yes…. easier?said than done.
  3. Surround yourself with supportive people: It's important to have people around you who support and encourage you, especially when you're facing challenges or doubts. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your business, your life and who can provide constructive feedback from a place of care for your wellbeing.
  4. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential to reducing stress and anxiety. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food. Take breaks and engage in activities that you enjoy. When you take care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way, including any negative feedback or criticism.
  5. Practice Mindfulness by bringing close to you the things that trigger you.?Remember triggers are a way for you to notice where you still have wounds and what you need to work on within yourself to grow and expand.?Not being mindful is being absent minded and throwing your future to the hands of others who may or may not want what’s best for you.?Most are not actually thinking of you as they are busy thinking of themselves.
