"Own Your Development"
If you've ever heard this from a manager and felt lost about how to take action, you're not alone.
Too often, this phrase is tossed out like a mic drop, leaving people unsure of where to start and maybe even questioning whether they're falling behind.
What does "own your development" mean? Immediately, you begin to spiral into idea overload: sign up for an extracurricular course to learn a new skill? Apply for open roles?? Volunteer on a committee?? Practice public speaking?? Job shadow in other departments?? Get another degree?? The possibilities can feel endless and overwhelming.???
Here’s the truth: you’re not alone and you're not missing anything.?
Over the years, I’ve led teams, mentored people to promotion, and continuously work on my own development goals. Through those experiences, I’ve learned that "owning your development" is deeply personal—it looks different for everyone. If you’re unsure where to begin, here are a few actionable steps that might help:
3 Practical Tips to Own Your Development:
1?? Write it down.
Map out where you are today and where you want to go. Identify the gaps you need to close to get there.? What pieces are missing?? A clear roadmap creates focus and momentum.

2?? Build your circle.
Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you, but also people who are steps ahead of you. Whether it’s through professional groups, employee resource groups, or connections in your network, get intentional about having meaningful conversations. That can be as simple as inviting someone to coffee or a virtual lunch.?
3?? Get a mentor (not your boss).
A mentor outside your direct reporting line offers fresh perspectives, unbiased advice, and guidance to help you think bigger.
Your development is personal, but that doesn’t mean you must do it alone. I’d love to hear your thoughts:
