Ever had one of those days where you feel like you’ve just navigated through a series of distractions to find that your to-do list has got bigger?!
Me too!
Having structure in our day is more important than ever before given what are all currently living through. Structure helps ensure that we make progress with that ever-growing list of things to do!
With this in mind, I have put together a list of 5 things that you can do to set yourself up for success every day. I swear by these strategies myself.
But, before we get stuck in, here are a few pieces of overarching advice:
- Remember not to take on too much ‘new activity’ at once - this will set you up for failure.
- Start with activity one, and once you feel proficient with that, introduce the next item on the list and so on...
- Build up your new habits slowly and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t succeed the first time round. Feel comfortable with starting again but noticing what didn’t work initially.
After all, that’s the key to success.
Understanding, perseverance and gradual improvement.
Ok, so, initial advice out of the way! Here are my 5 Top Tips for owning your day!
Tip #1) Write out your morning routine
From the time you get up - to when you start work, or activities at home. Split your morning routine into 15 or 20 min gaps. If you have a different routine for different mornings, write them all out. Here is an example:
If you would like a blank copy of the above “Morning Routine” template, send me a message or leave a comment on this post and I will be happy to send one to you.
Tip #2) Ensure you drink enough water
Set a reminder on your phone to drink a glass of water every hour between 10am and 4pm. You don’t need a fancy bottle - you’d probably still need a reminder to drink that! Just set a reminder and ensure you fill yourself up with some of that quality H20 frequently.
Sounds so simple - yet rarely do we stay hydrated. The difference will be immediate.
Tip #3) The 3x3 rule
Take a break to do NOTHING 3x a day for three minutes.
Simply sit and listen to a piece of music, clear your thoughts, or look at the clouds in the sky. This is the one I struggle with the most - I need to listen to my own advice believe it or not?! So, my reminders have been duly set. And I intend to be more present as I know this is so effective in me feeling like I am owning my day.
My day is for me and I will prioritise time to enjoy it.
Tip #4) Go outside
Go for a walk, stick your head out the window, look at the clouds and breathe in the fresh air. Breathing is the most crucial and undervalued aspect of our life.
It is important to enjoy it. (Worth setting a reminder to do this as it can be easily forgotten!) (Lots of reminders here - hey if we all did this stuff of our own volition - we'd all be feeling great, right?!)
* Please be mindful of others and keep your distance when doing your 1 outdoor activity each day during lockdown. Cross the road to allow space for you to pass at a safe distance.
Tip #5) Bedtime routine
Go to bed early and don’t look at a screen for an hour before you sleep. Ensure you set up a routine like your morning routing. Find a great app to help you get to sleep, here are some fab examples I have used:
Doing the same routine every day will help massively to tune your body clock and permit the natural rhythms and healing to take place in your body.
And there you have it! 5 things that you can start building in to your daily routine in order for every day to be a success for you.
Oh, and don’t forget to let me know how you get on! If you have some suggestions that you think can be added to the list, let me know! Let's share the wisdom!
