In the last two decades, I have learned the secret of career success. Taking ownership of your career development will help you reach your dream job. To lead and add value, your job title is not important at all. For developing the current capabilities and building long-term organizational resilience, successful companies encourage their people to carefully plan and develop practical competencies. To be successful in your career, be realistic, trust yourself, and focus on continuous learning.

Identify Weaknesses, Uncover Blind Spots, and Strengthen Skills

There aren’t any shortcuts, but with hard work and perseverance, you can develop the skills, experiences, and relationships you’ll need to thrive in the workplace. Carter Cast recommends the six strategies to take control of your career and learning:

  • Understand what you’re evaluated on.
  • Get feedback, especially on areas that might be blind spots for you.
  • Give yourself a grade for each skill you need to do your job well and focus your time and energy on the areas where you can most improve.
  • Increase your visibility with senior leaders so that your work can get noticed.
  • Become the expert in your department on an emerging issue that’s important to the company.
  • Find a good mentor who can help you along the way.
