Own the Stage

Own the Stage

All of life is a stage and you better learn how to own it and control it or you will be forever undervalued and overlooked. Last night I watched the GOP Debate, not for the politics, but because I am the consummate student, always looking to learn what I need to know and what I must avoid. This debate did not disappoint with a plethora of lessons.

Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee and Ben Carson barely showed up. When you are invited to be on stage you better show up and you better get your time! The world will not just give you your fair share.

It's not enough to be invited or to have a great message, or a great name or a lot of money. You have to show up and claim the stage.

Notice Bush, he showed up took a run and then he disappeared. In fact he only claimed six minutes in front of the camera, and when he did take a shot at staking a claim he was humiliated by his junior, Rubio, who came ready to sell his position and close a deal. Then look at how Trump, Chris Christie and Ted Cruze owned the stage, present like authorities and sell their positions. They all stayed present and looked for opportunities to demonstrate positions of authority.

I have been speaking to audiences for 30 years. Here are the three things you must do when presenting to an audience or at any time in life:

1) Show up and keep showing up after you arrive.

2) Without being arrogant let the audience know you are the authority and make a giant claim about what they are going to get from you being in front of them.

3) Then sell your position and ask for the close.

At some point you will be called on to claim the stage, present yourself and sell your position. Whether you are a manager, executive, or simply looking for a job. Learn how to do this or you will forever be underpaid and undervalued.

Politicians won't and can't help you. If you are going to take care of yourself and family, I think you will agree, it is up to you. Show up, be the authority and sell your position.

It doesn't matter whether you are a sales type or not, an introvert or an extrovert, whether you like the stage or don't like it. Find your stage and claim it, become an authority, take a position, defend that position and learn to SELL it.

It sure takes more than showing up to get things done. Great post Grant.

On point, Grant. Nicely put. I find, when speaking in front of audiences, that audiences elect themselves "Effect" and grant the speaker the position of "Cause" on the communication line. They expect you to tell them something with confidence; they want that. Doing so satisfies and sells, which is why your line, "show up and keep showing up after you arrive," makes so much sense.
