The Benefits of a Well-Designed Stairwell
?Stairwell design matters! It should not be considered an afterthought. According to an article from WebMD, there are many health benefits to taking stairs as opposed to the elevator. An analysis?of nine studies of half a million people found that climbing stairs is linked to a 24% lower risk of early death from any cause, and a 39% lower likelihood of death from cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes.?Climbing stairs also burns calories, key to positive weight management! Well-planned stairwells encourage physical well-being and enhances safety during day-to-day and emergency conditions. Click here to read more!
?You’ll find that Johnsonite has more options than any manufacturer when it comes to design for stairwells. Please! No more excuses for boring stairwells!

Stairwell Parts and Pieces: Risers, Stringers, and Visually Impaired Options
Below: here is a visually impaired “Safe-T-First” vinyl tread. Vinyl is a fine choice for light commercial or residential. It is less expensive. But for maximum durability and longest life-cycle, rubber is the proven winner!
What About Contrast Inserts?
?I sometimes get asked about contrast inserts for rubber treads. I refer to the US Access Board, an independent federal agency that promotes equality for people with disabilities through leadership in accessible design and the development of accessibility guidelines and standards. Their recommendation is as follows:
?“Providing visual contrast (light-on-dark or dark-on-light)on the top and bottom steps that is approximately 2 inches wide and located either on nosings or at the leading edges of treads is helpful for people with low vision.”
?Above: Visually impaired contrast color strips provide visual cue to the edge of the step surface. A coordinating rubber stringer protects the sides of the stairwell from scuffing and enhances cleanability. Choose grit tape insert in spaces that may be subject to wet conditions.
Keep in mind, grit tape inserts are subject to wear in extreme conditions. But no worries! Tapes may be replaced by your favorite professional flooring contractor! Ask for details!
