“We should not fret for what is past, nor should we be anxious about the future; men of discernment deal only with the present moment.” Chanakya
When we are under significant amounts of stress we tend to lose our perspective. We become overwhelmed, anxious, and at times irrational. It can feel as if we are contained and restricted.
We can become increasingly impulsive and overreactive. We bounce from one consideration to the next and from one task to another, never fulfilling our obligations or reaching our objectives. Remaining focused gets increasingly difficult.
As we evolve through life, we should strive to learn from the errors of our ways but reflection is easier when we are in a rational state, not panicked.
Evaluating our past during times of significant stress can have negative implications. We can harbor guilt, regret, shame, sadness, and anger. We desperately want to change the fact that something occurred though we understand the impossibility of that task. We simply linger in our mistakes. We cannot reside here.
As we consider the future while entrenched in stress, we accelerate our thought process and in doing so, we begin to manifest anxiety. We build up a series of “what if’s” as opposed to “what is”. We have a tendency to get too far ahead of ourselves. It is counterproductive to reaching our goals and moving beyond the source of our tension.
The combined results are a severely diminished ability to function proficiently and an erosion of our mental state. This is the path to breakdowns. It can be debilitating.
How do we combat and manage the totality of these situations?
One method is by staying totally present. We need to tackle each individual task by breaking them down into manageable components, remaining focused and on point until we complete what is directly in front of us.
“The point of power is always in the present moment.” Louise L.Hay
Then, we tackle the next task using the same methodology. Successively, we begin to chip away at the imperative things we need to accomplish to work past our perceived duress.
Theoretically, it’s logical and fluid but the real world is subjective and relative. Staying present takes a resilient focus, strength and a desire to work through the issues at hand.
This isn’t easy but it’s vital to retain a strong level of productive output and keep the debilitating effects of stress at arm's length.
Stay in the moment, break down your tasks and keep moving forward. You’ll soon discover you have defeated the negativity that was holding you back.
“A great hallmark of mental wellness is the ability to be in the present moment, fully and with no thoughts of being elsewhere.” Wayne Dyer
