As a single mom for many years, I know firsthand how overwhelming financial stress can be. Balancing the demands of raising children while trying to make ends meet is tough—so I wanted to share three tips that helped me regain control over my finances and reduce that constant weight of worry.
1. Track Your Monthly Spending
The first step to financial stability is understanding exactly where your money is going. Track your spending every month. When you know how much you have and where it’s being spent, you can make informed decisions about the best ways to cut costs, save money, and prioritize spending. Simply put, you can’t plan for the future until you have a clear picture of your present financial situation.
2. Prioritize Wants vs. Needs
Another critical step is learning how to differentiate between wants and needs. One strategy that worked for me is redirecting money you’d usually spend on non-essential purchases towards an emergency fund. Building a safety net—aim for at least six months' worth of living expenses—can be a lifesaver in case of unexpected income loss. Having that buffer will give you peace of mind and keep your family financially secure.
3. Find Deals and Free Fun
Raising kids doesn’t have to be expensive, and fun doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. There are plenty of free or low-cost activities available if you take the time to look. For example, local parks are always a great option, and many museums, zoos, and other attractions offer free or discounted admission days. Check out your local visitor center or chamber of commerce for coupons and discounted passes to nearby attractions. Many municipalities also offer reasonably priced or subsidized programs for kids, especially during the summer or on weekends.
My Journey to Financial Freedom
Despite all my efforts to save, prioritize, and budget as a single mom, there was always this feeling of not being able to provide the life I wanted for my children. I felt stuck in the constant struggle of deciding between wants and needs. Eventually, I knew I needed something more—a way to truly break free from financial stress.
That’s when I started exploring online business opportunities. Like many, I tried several things, and yes, I wasted some time and money. But I didn’t give up. I finally found an online opportunity that checked all the boxes for me.
Here’s why it works for me:
