By a lot of D365FO projects where I'm involved workflow is used. If you use workflow, in the user settings you can enable that emails will be sent when you have to take action based on a workflow task:
Lately I came in a conversation where a customers asked me why e-mails about workflow where not sent to one specific user. Because when finance asked that person why actions where not taken, that person said that he / she never got the emails with actions. Other users didn't have that problem and the option 'send notifications in email' was turned on.
In order to prevent that we ended up in the wrong discussion, I asked if the customer already checked the sent emails from D365FO based on workflow. But they didn't know that this option is available and after questioning around I see more organizations that doesn't know that you can find the sent e-mails back. So therefore I share the link how to find that sent emails from D365FO based on workflow actions:
You go to System Administration -> Periodic tasks -> Email processing -> Batch email sending status. By this option you can see all sent emails and in the column Email description you can search for 'workflow':
In the column Status you can see if the email is sent from D365FO or not. If not, you can restart sending if you want. Do you want to see the details of the email that was sent? Then select the line and click on 'Show message':
Here you can see the total email that is sent to the user:
So with this overview you can always find back if emails based on workflow actions are sent or not sent from D365FO to the users.
