Overview of Screen Readers Across Operating Systems

Overview of Screen Readers Across Operating Systems

Windows

NVDA and JAWS are screen readers of choice for many on Windows. the usage of both is nearly the same. NVDA is free and open-source, and JAWS on the other hand is proprietary.

Narrator - is a default screen reader built-in Windows from version 10, which is not as popular as NVDA or JAWS (a recent study by WebAIM shows it has only 0.7% of all their respondents)

MacOS / iOS

VoiceOver is a default screen reader on Apple devices (macOS, iOS). iPhone's VoiceOver supports different inputs as well as on-screen braille.

Android

TalkBack is a default screen reader on Android. It supports different input methods, as well as on-screen braille.

Linux

Even so, the NVDA screen reader is free and open-source, it’s not multiplatform, so for desktop Linux users, the only available are:

  • Orca — a GUI screen reader
  • Emacspeak — screen reader (as you can guess) for Emacs editor.
  • Fenrir — An screenreader for terminal.
