An overview of my LinkedIn network activity Analytics from September 2021 – July 2023

An overdue update to “Why, Yes I’m Fascinated By Stats. Geek? Metric From My Recent LinkedIn (Activity) Posts ” of November 9, 2019?

Fair warning: LONG. My December 2019 version was over 4,500 words. This present version is about 4,000+ words so it still may be more than some people want to devote in looking through this…

[Please forgive the appearance of some of these data, particularly rows of numbers, which simply look sloppy. I've long found it tremendously difficult to get this publishing platform to cooperate on creating a tidy column of numbers or similar items, so I actually did spend hours of that before basically giving up and not listing many such things I had intended to. I don't have any additional time, if not interest, in tidying this up. After all, I make no money or anything else from this. I do this as a matter of personal interest, as well as that for a few others. I appreciate your patience on this issue. - SCH]

Company Views/Impressions Analytic Data for my Posts from July 2021 – July 2023

Scott Holstad , August 4, 2023

-- 392 Companies/Orgs as seen on LinkedIn Analytics – [NOT an exhaustive list.]

?80-400+ views/impressions??(top companies per impressions) [16]

from July 2021 – July 2023

[Note how close the top three companies are to each other]

[If there are any repeats or mistakes, the fault is mine. I have proofed this several times but am far from perfect.]

There is a new Number One this year, though two regulars are also virtually tied for the top. AWS came on strong in 2023 on a consistent basis to overtake the near-annual top viewing organization, the United States Air Force . I don’t recall offhand, but I think USAF has been #1 annually going back into the previous decade. #AWS beat #USAF by 2 views/impressions. Another company that always seems to finish in the top three every year finished third again this year: Microsoft . #Microsoft finished only 1 impression behind USAF and 3 behind AWS, making for a very tight race at the top.

There were a few other surprises in these data. Two national labs finished in the top 5, #ORNL at #4 and #INL at #5. First, no national lab has ever finished in the top 10, so many thanks to both. However, they spent 85% of two years battling each other for the lead with the Air Force a bit behind and no one else close. Thus it was a surprise to see both plunge from the analytics two months ago and watch three other companies to pass them.

Some companies I won’t name have been top 10 stalwarts for many years but didn’t place in the top 25 this year. I’m pretty sure it’s topical, so I understand. That meant there had to be a few new additions though, so there are indeed several new ones, so welcome.

Finally, I’d like to send a special shout out to the fine people of C Spire , a company that rarely fits the business model of most of its annual top 10 peers on my network, but one in which I’ve been privileged to meet and know, ultimately, hundreds of tech professionals in large part for two related reasons. First, they are a very strong Mississippi-based private regional telecom carrier with other divisions as well, and I could swear they’re putting offices around the country. Most importantly, they have a strong Tennessee presence and I spent a long time in Chattanooga before moving to Gettysburg a few years ago. Second, in 2018 C Spire acquired another good tech company in Birmingham’s TekLinks, a move that enhanced their offerings, and a company where I had a ton of contacts, most of whom migrated to C Spire. As I already had connections at #CSpire , combining the two resulted in quite a few connections for a company not nearly as big as those with my most numerous connections (historically hundreds each at Microsoft, Cisco, US DoD, Amazon & AWS, etc., and more), but nearly as many and in my general area. And the thing is the good people there have displayed tremendous loyalty and the company appears in the top 10-15 companies here with the most views annually and I find that astonishing and humbling so I just wanted to acknowledge C Spire and send them my thanks.?

Of the remainder of the 392 recorded companies and organizations, I won’t include any specific numbers with the rest though they’ll be grouped with similarly ranked companies. I’m doing this for the first time so as to respect the privacy of some listed that may wish their numbers remain private. That said, I do want to make this as accurate as I’m able to, so I’m listing the remaining 360+ in order of the number of impressions from highest to lowest. One should not be able to ascertain any specific numbers with any specific company, however.

I had to stop using LinkedIn's numbering system because no matter what I do, no numbers appear on the next line and I have to do it manually (every damn time I write one of these!) and I refuse to type in nearly 400 numbers by hand, so unfortunately I'm going to the bullet point system they have, which does work, so even though the companies won't display the number, they'll still be in order in terms of number of impressions from high to low. Apologies...

An observation: While this list may appear weighted toward technology, government, defense & academia, I am pleased to see many other fields & industries represented here, among them finance, entertainment, healthcare, sports, retail, insurance, space, security, research, think tanks, media, consumer, nonprofits, energy, consulting, manufacturing, social media, engineering, intelligence, fashion, publishing & more.

Many additional fields & industries in this network aren’t seen in this list, one reason being some are quite small/niche, another being while I have personal interests in them, I have little to write about some, with apologizes. A personal goal is to eventually find inclusion for music, the arts, the legal field, humanitarianism, artists, transportation, luxury items, logistics, entertainers, hospitality & many more. It remains a goal.

According to LinkedIn’s basic analytics, the top five locations with the most impressions over the past 365 days were:

?

1.???#DC /Baltimore???????????????????? 18.2%

2.???New York City?????????????????????? 4.9%

3.???San Francisco??????????????????????4.6%

4.???Los Angeles?????????????????????????4.4%

5.???Boston??????????????????????????????????2.3%

A few observations.?

  • 16 of the 100 locations made appearances in triple digits (16%)
  • The top 16 locations were all in the US.
  • 40 of the 100 locations were #international (40%)
  • Two of the first three international locations were both in Ukraine. (#Ukraine never entered my top 40 until late 2021.)?

  1. #17 #Chernihiv Metro Area?????
  2. #24 #Kharkiv
  3. #61 #Kyiv also appears further down the list and much more recently.?

  • At least 9 of my former hometowns made this list so apparently I've not yet been forgotten.
  • Additionally, at least 12 more cities made this list where I spent a good deal time on contract or consulting jobs as well as a couple of places where I worked to obtain academic degrees.

SECTION 7 (SCH LI Analytics & Data)

Brief Addendum

And I’m afraid this is it. It’s a vastly abbreviated follow-up to my more thorough December 2019 report , which was still a large attraction for thousands of people this year.?

I wanted to 1) publish this a long time ago and 2) provide the type of analysis, insights and conjecture I’ve done previously, but I’ve not been able to find nor justify the time, so I’m literally publishing it without analysis, leaving that up to any party reading this to do for themselves. I know this is abrupt, but while I hate leaving projects unfinished, circumstances in my life require that as I’m time-challenged with too many other “more important” things to attend to – this has been a time-stealing luxury in the past, but it ends now. I hope someone reading this finds it of interest or of some use. I am aware of a variety of uses potentially applied to this once-annual report and I tried to keep #information more limited and private in this iteration as a result. Thanks to all who ever read the things I post. I don’t take that for granted and I appreciate all who take the time to do so.?

One final note that I almost forgot to broach. Just an FYI. LinkedIn provides real-time data in its #analytics concerning one's posts and articles’ impressions and engagement. The data are split up as “past 7, 14, 28, 90 and 365 days.” Obviously depending on quantity and quality, one’s numbers can fluctuate wildly. My current numbers for my past 365 days aren’t reflective of what one would expect as I took parts of at least 12 weeks off for health reasons (including surgeries) and wrote virtually nothing. However, the shorter timespans in the #data have been encouraging. Recent figures indicate that, depending on the time variable, my impressions are #trending up from over half a million views/impressions a year to plausibly over 850,000+ per year. So thanks to all of you, but please wish me luck as that’s a heck of a lot of pressure to try to maintain if not continue to grow. Finally, feel free to offer topic suggestions. Cheers!
