I know we have all run into the same issue, to take that Saturday shift or not. Nowadays work is more important than ever but so are your kids, so what do you do? I don't believe there is an exact answer to this problem. I feel each situation is going to be different but there are factors you take into consideration. These factors will ultimately make the decision for you. These are the same as if you have to go to the doctors, except involve another's feelings. So how do you decide?
Well, there are factors I use or we as a family use, I should say. Every family is going to be different so use you best judgment is always something every individual will need to do, of course. Kids is always the biggest struggle for me, personally. I worked through my sons entire first year of soccer, except one game. I went to work that day also and the Lord said "Nope" shut down FedEx for the only time in over 5 years that I worked there. We have two other kids and every year it has been different.
The big factor is the one and only MONEY as I'm sure you assumed. Money is the driving force of the world and when it comes to your days off, it for damn sure matters. Hats off to those of you who can enjoy their days off but for most of us this just isn't an option. In today's world Saturday and even Sunday it has become ideal to work on these days. Doesn't mean you should though, especially not if you have children.
So, we have kids, money and the third thing to look at I believe is your job. What do you do? Do you enjoy it? Does it pay well or just so, so? Are you a line cook or the manager? Do people work under you? These are all things you should be asking yourself when you decide. Yes, your kids matter and always come first but if you're a manager or the owner you have other people's lives and dreams depending on you. Not that every job isn't as important as the next because they all play a vital role in production.

Basically, what it boils down to is what you need to do for your situation. We were struggling financially, so I needed to work. Not only that but I ran routes most my life. So, it would have been hard for someone else, and they have a life also and their part of the business to run. These are other factors as an employee you should ask yourself before calling in. DO NOT let a company over work you and under value you, especially if you are missing time with your children. Be a good employee when you can but be a better parent at all times. Do what you have to to get through but make sure your kids are understanding the struggle. Most of all when you get done with work Be There For Them.
Be the best employee you can be, give your company what you promised plus a little if you can. Never Forget Your Family Will Miss You When You're Gone. Your Place of Work Will Have an Ad for Your Job not an Ad Commemorating Your Work.
