Is Overthinking Tanking You?

Overthinking can get in the way of completing tasks, which in turn can slow progress on the most desired goal.

Follow the trail of causes.

Obsessing over a family member, for example, whether they’re physically present or not, makes things take longer. Maybe you trail off in thought about a disapproving parent or troublesome teen. You spend twice as long on the phone with a friend hashing out the latest wrong they did you. And the time blocked off to accomplish a specific task gets missed. That task was a necessary component to a bigger overall goal.

We can promise to fit the task in tomorrow, or bank on the ever-elusive “later”, but the overall schedule and the accomplishment of that goal has been pushed off, in disservice to our heart’s true desire.

A lot of things can take be the focal point for obsession.

  • Obsessing over colors and fonts when you just need to get that website live,
  • obsessing over the best argument for your case when you really need to just pick one and get on with prepping, or
  • obsessing over which Bar Exam topics will be tested this go around when you should just start studying.

Obsessing over anything is a way of protecting yourself from the unknown circumstances of the future you’re working toward. If you want to meet a big goal you will have to find a way to make all parts of you feel safe stepping out of the comfort zone and into that goal. This isn’t a case of “just do it” though.

Many take that 'Nike' route and meet with dismal results. We know you’ve got the guts and courage. You can definitely do something to effectuate change on your circumstances. But there’s a science and method behind properly moving out of your comfort zone into your goal so you can get, keep and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
