Overthinking Kills

Overthinking Kills

Overthinking is more than an unhelpful habit; it disrupts your wellbeing and performance at every level:

  • It kills your confidence with self-doubt and negative thinking traps.
  • It kills your creativity by keeping you stuck on problems rather than solutions.
  • It kills your inner peace by making you hypervigilant for danger.
  • It kills your energy by keeping your nervous system locked in overdrive.

Why Do We Overthink?

?Overthinking is rooted in the body's stress response. According to the Polyvagal Theory, when you feel unsafe or overwhelmed, your nervous system shifts into a state of heightened alertness, triggering "fight or flight." The brain then replays scenarios and overanalyses details, believing it’s solving threats. However, this loop often amplifies anxiety, leaving you stuck and depleted.

Why Do Some People Overthink?

Certain individuals are more prone to overthinking due to:

  • Past experiences of unpredictability or danger, driving a need for control.
  • Heightened sensitivity to uncertainty, amplifying the nervous system's response.
  • Habits rooted in fear of failure or perfectionism, keeping the brain in constant analysis mode.

This cycle reinforces itself, leaving you mentally trapped and physically exhausted.

How to Break the Overthinking-Stress Cycle

Breaking free from overthinking isn’t about more thinking—it’s about taking actions that regulate your physiological state. Your body drives your mind, and to change your thoughts, you must first shift your body’s nervous system state.

?Case Study: Breaking Free from Overthinking to Clarity and Productivity

?Client Profile: Alex, a 42-year-old successful senior executive at a multinational firm, approached me for coaching, he was overwhelmed by self-doubt, decision fatigue and chronic overthinking. Known for his excellent analytical skills, Alex felt trapped in mental loops, replaying scenarios and second-guessing decisions. His overthinking was not only affecting his performance but also leaving him exhausted and disconnected from his personal life.

The Challenge:

Alex’s nervous system was stuck in a stress-driven "fight or flight" mode. He struggled to shut off his thoughts, even outside work hours, leading to sleepless nights and burnout.

The Solution: I shared the mechanics of how the body drives the mind and offered a wide range of nervous system regulation strategies which he explores and consistently practice:

?These were his favourites

  1. 4-7-8 Breathing: Alex practiced this daily, especially before meetings, to reduce stress and sharpen his focus.
  2. Movement Microbreaks: He integrated 5-minute walks or stretches into his workday to release tension and reset his mind.
  3. Aromatherapy: Lavender oil in his home office created a calming atmosphere that helped him transition from work to personal time.

The Result: Within weeks, Alex reported feeling lighter, happier, and more productive. His mental clarity improved, decision-making felt easier, and he experienced improved sleep. Regulating his nervous system gave him the tools to break the cycle of overthinking and reclaim balance in his life.

?By working with his biology, Alex broke the overthinking cycle and reclaimed his productivity and peace of mind.

The Key Takeaway

Overthinking is a stress response, not a character flaw. By understanding and harnessing the power of your nervous system, you can unlock clarity, confidence, and calm. Working with your biology, rather than against it, is a game-changer for executives facing daily challenges. Transform your physiology—and your thoughts will follow.

Andrea Edmondson this is so true! Overthinking uses very fast frequency brainwaves (Beta and High Beta range) but creative ideas are more likely to come to our mind when we're in slow frequencies like Theta and Alpha, which we experience when we're relaxed and not focused. We need to be able to ebb and flow between these states throughout the day. Here's to breaking the cycle of stress and go go go!

Andrea Edmondson, your insights into the impact of overthinking are spot on. It's a common challenge that can hinder our progress and well-being. As you mentioned, the key to overcoming overthinking lies in regulating our bodies and minds. By practicing mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, we can reduce stress, increase focus, and make better decisions. Remember, it's not about eliminating negative thoughts, but about learning to manage them effectively.
