Overthinking

I was late for the daily morning meeting for the sixth consecutive day. I found a sticky note on my monitor saying, "Please see me." It was my boss.

I initially thought he would scold me for consistently being late. But then I remembered our customer has been unhappy with my work for some time.?

I figured I was about to be fired. My heart stopped beating; I didn't know what to do next with my life.?

Anyway, I stopped by his office after I could gather myself.?

He just smiled at me and handed over the annual bonus check.

A comment that's not concerning this topic. I appreciate your daily LinkedIn posts very much, they are uplifting and helpful. I'm so proud I was one of your students and colleagues as well :)

When I overthink, I ask myself: "Self, is it true, is it useful, is it kind?" My boss asked me to put a joke on the first slide of the presentation…apparently, a picture of my bonus check wasn’t what he was looking for :)

It's a difficult balance to walk, being self aware of one's flaws and areas for improvement on one hand, and being one's own worst enemy and biggest critic on the other hand. The imagination can really run away if one is not careful, so it's important to focus on the facts and stay grounded in reality. I'm glad your anecdote had a happy ending and some encouragement for you to continue to improve, as we all need that a nudge in the right direction sometimes ??!
