Overshoot day - what does it mean?

Overshoot Day is the day of the year when humanity's total annual demand for natural resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that same year. This means that we are exceeding the Earth's capacity to recover and are consuming resources at a rate that is not sustainable in the long term.?

Overshoot Day is calculated each year by the Global Footprint Network and the exact date varies from year to year. The later in the year that Overshoot Day occurs, the more sustainable our lifestyle is per country. Overshoot day in Sweden this year is April 3, 2023. That means that the rest of this year we live on borrowed resources from future generations and from other nations that don't consume as much as we do in Sweden. This year, the global Earth Overshoot Day is July 27, which means that Sweden is one of the countries that over-consumes the earth's resources the most.

Not all countries will have an overshoot day. A country will only have an overshoot day if its Ecological Footprint per person is greater than global biocapacity per person.?

Our overshoot day in Sweden has stayed the same since 2018.

In previous years, Sweden has had these dates for Overshoot day:

2018 April 4

2019 April 3

2020 April 2

2021 April 6

2022 April 3

How to calculate a country's overshoot day

Counting example from Overshootday.org?

Let’s take Switzerland's Overshoot Day as an example. Its 2023 overshoot day is based on the latest available results from the 2022 edition of the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts:

  • The Ecological Footprint of Switzerland is 4.35 global hectares (gha) per person (numbers from 2018)
  • Global biocapacity is 1.6 gha per person (in 2018)

Therefore, it would take (4.35/ 1.6) = 2.75 Earths to support humanity if everyone on the planet lived like the Swiss.

OR

We can determine Swiss Overshoot Day using the equation 365 * (1.6/4.35) = 133, or as the 133rd day in the year. The 133rd day of 2023 is May 13th.
