Success is a marathon event - it's not something you can make happen overnight, there are no shortcuts, it's not something you can inherit or purchase or win. Success is something you have to define for yourself, create for yourself, and if you want to keep it and multiply it you will have to continue to push to do so. Getting success is one thing, keeping it another and then taking it to other levels a whole other subject.
Probably the biggest challenge with success is in that you will continue to change how you define it. I know you say, "if I could just get 'x' I would be satisfied." But that is not what most people do and by the way if you don't you will not keep what you created.

When you start after success as soon as you get a little bit of it, you become aware of how much more is possible for you. No one sets a success goal with their full potential understood. At the age of 25 I wanted to be a successful salesperson. Not long after I committed to getting great at sales by increasing my competence through studying, observation and application. In thirty days I went from being an average sales person to outstanding (in comparison). When that happened I became aware for the first time what was really possible and that I had underestimated my potential.
Just a few years later my new success target was to become recognized throughout the world as one of the greatest sale teachers to ever live. Grandiose right? It was, but I know I will go down as one of the greats. I am not bragging it's true - that is what I have done. I only say that to show you that the first goal I set as a struggling salesperson was just the wrong goal because I was not capable of setting the right sized targets at that time.
Success grows as your abilities increase. Your desire for more success (however you define it) will grow as you raise your responsibility in your field. Become more competent and you will see more of your potential. More success is not just an ego thing, it's really about awareness of your potential. I think this potential awareness is what makes success the marathon event that it is.
It took me 25 years to build my speaking career. This included more than ten thousand speaking gigs, three million commercial flight miles, countless nights in hotels (alone), and countless missed holidays and ballgames. I am not asking you to feel sorry for me, hell I don't even feel sorry for me, it's all been worth it.

The point is regardless of how you define success I can assure you four things: 1) It's going to take more effort than you can ever imagine 2) your desire for more success will grow as you become aware of your potential, 3) refuse to quit and you will further than you ever dreamed, and 4) it will be worth it.
