For years, journaling has been my go-to tool for understanding myself on a deeper level. Like many, I initially turned to writing during moments of struggle—capturing thoughts and emotions I felt unable to share with others. This practice was invaluable in identifying patterns, understanding triggers, and uncovering the reasons behind my challenges. However, my approach to journaling had a significant blind spot: I only wrote when things were going wrong.
This is a common pattern. When we’re feeling joyful, content, or in a state of flow, journaling can feel unnecessary—or even counterproductive. We often prioritize savoring the moment over pausing to write about it. Does this sound familiar? It certainly was my reality for years.
What I failed to recognize at the time was the importance of understanding why I felt good. I never asked myself questions like:
Instead, I simply rode the wave of positivity without pausing to reflect. While it’s impossible to remain in a constant state of happiness, we can create a foundation for a more balanced and fulfilling life. And that begins with understanding the mechanisms that support our well-being.
The Missing Link in My Reflection Practice
As part of my weekly reflection routine, I’ve long asked myself, “What went well this week?” Yet, for a long time, I stopped short of digging deeper into why those things went well. The result? I struggled to create consistency in my emotional and mental state, often focusing too heavily on the negative aspects of my life.
Tony Robbins famously said, “Where focus goes, energy flows.” By focusing exclusively on problems or areas for growth, I unintentionally perpetuated cycles of criticism and dissatisfaction. Growth is important, but so is enjoying the process—and I was failing to celebrate the wins that were already present in my life.
Shifting the Lens: Journaling to Understand Positivity
If you’re someone who journals—or is looking to begin—here’s an important shift to consider: don’t just reflect on what’s going wrong. Use journaling as a tool to explore why things are going right.
Ask yourself:
By answering these questions, you’ll begin to identify patterns and create strategies that help you maintain a state of flow and satisfaction more consistently. While happiness is fleeting, building a fulfilling and balanced life is a sustainable goal—and journaling can be your roadmap.
The Takeaway
Journaling isn’t just a practice for navigating hardship; it’s an essential tool for understanding and cultivating what brings you joy and satisfaction. By reflecting on the good as much as the bad, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of what supports your well-being—and create a foundation for a life that feels more aligned, purposeful, and fulfilling.
Start today. Reflect not only on what went well, but on why it went well. You might be surprised by what you discover—and how much power you hold to shape your own experience.
