Overcoming Toxic Leadership: A Personal Tale of Growth and Empowerment

As a lawyer with an array of mentoring and leadership experiences under my belt, I have learned a great deal about what makes a work environment thrive. When asked in a recent interview to discuss my encounters with toxic leadership, I realized the importance of sharing these insights in a candid and engaging article.

Throughout my career, my goal has always been to lead by example and create positive, collaborative work environments where team members feel valued and inspired. I firmly believe that effective leadership and mentoring involve adaptability, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution. To achieve this, I've made it a point to establish trust with my team while fostering an atmosphere that encourages learning, growth, and learning from mistakes.

However, my journey has not been without its challenges. Early in my career, I had a boss who was content with mediocrity, showing little interest in pushing boundaries or reaching for more. This individual, once a friend, quickly became a roadblock to my professional growth. Anytime I was on the verge of taking on a new project or meeting with higher-ups, my boss would swoop in, micromanaging every aspect of my work and stifling my potential. When a promotion opportunity arose, my boss chose to hire externally rather than nurture my growth, leaving me feeling undervalued and betrayed.

Recognizing the toxic nature of this relationship, I made the difficult decision to leave my job. As I embarked on new professional ventures, I was astounded by how quickly I grew and the wealth of knowledge I gained. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes, you don't fully comprehend the weight of a situation until you're no longer engulfed in it.

Later in my career, I faced yet another challenge—a narcissistic boss with a knack for creating a toxic work environment. This individual seemed oblivious about his lack of empathy and his destructive behavior, making it difficult to address any issue directly. However, having weathered previous experiences with toxic leadership, I was better prepared this time. I developed strategies to shield both myself and my team from the negative effects from his toxic behavior, fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere, despite the challenges we faced. Although thinking about mental health, these are situations we can only endure for so long. And seeing no light at the end of the tunnel, again I had to prepare my exit ensuring my team was safe and supported.

Of course, it's important to acknowledge the fantastic bosses I've had the pleasure of working with. Early in my career, I was fortunate to have a manager whom I considered a true inclusive Leader. Someone who demonstrated immense trust in me, delegating and giving me the freedom to fail and learn from my mistakes. A true constructive experience that I dearly use as an example to be replicated. He empowered me every step of the way. Serving as a mentor, a manager, and a dear friend, placing me in leadership roles despite my lack of experience The support and encouragement I received during that time was invaluable in shaping my professional growth.

Another incredible experience came when I had the opportunity to work with a brilliant international lawyer. This individual possessed an unparalleled level of expertise and skill in the field of law, opening my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. His passion and knowledge not only deepened my understanding of the law but also expanded my perspective on what a career in law could offer. Innovation and opportunity were the true fuel for advancement.

These positive experiences have taught me invaluable lessons in both people skills and technical knowledge. As I reflect on the varying environments I've encountered throughout my career, I'm reminded of the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive and inspiring colleagues. It's in these moments of growth and learning that we can truly appreciate the impact of good leadership and understand the stark contrast between positive and toxic work environments.

A recent?Gallup?poll of more than one million workers concluded that the No.?1 reason people quit their jobs is a bad boss or immediate supervisor, and the legal world is no exception.

The takeaway from my journey – it’s inevitable, we will confront toxic leadership at some point in our careers. The crucial question is how we respond. Will we stand up for ourselves, seek support within the company, or learn to cope with the situation? Or will we let these experiences limit our potential and dictate our career paths?

Toxic leadership has devastating consequences on any profession and the individuals involved. Toxic leaders often exhibit traits such as abuse of power, lack of empathy, micromanagement, and excessive criticism, which can create a toxic work environment that undermines productivity, morale, and mental health.

However, leadership programs can mitigate this mistake by empowering upcoming professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead ethically and effectively. Such programs can provide education on leadership styles, communication skills, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence, among others. By promoting a culture of inclusivity, respect, and collaboration, leadership programs can help prevent toxic behaviors and create a more positive and productive legal work environment. Ultimately, the legal world shouldn’t be an exception and start investing more in leadership development for legal professionals, not only a matter of mitigating toxic leadership but also of building a better future for the legal profession.

By sharing my own story, I hope to inspire others to recognize and confront toxic leadership when they encounter it. Quoting Maya Angelou “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”. It is through overcoming these hurdles that we can truly grow, thrive, and become the leaders we always aspired to be.
