Overcoming Stage Anxiety: Practical Tips for Confident Public Speaking

Hey LinkedIn friends,

Let's talk about something that many of us have experienced at some point in our lives: stage anxiety. Whether you're presenting in a meeting, giving a speech at a conference, or performing on stage, that feeling of nervousness can sneak up on you and leave you feeling faint, blank, dry throat or like you're about to faint.

For me, it all started way back in the day when I was cast as a 'Calling Bird' in the Twelve Days Of Christmas school production. Amidst the chaos of being a nine-year-old with a lot on my mind (my dad was in the hospital at the time), I stumbled my way through the performance, unintentionally turning it into a comedy act by colliding with another 'bird' and setting off a chain reaction of falls.

Fast forward to today, and while I've become a confident speaker, those nerves still appear occasionally. But don't worry because I've learned a few tricks along the way to turn those nerves into fuel for a killer presentation.?

Here are five practical tips to help you conquer stage anxiety:

  1. Preparation is Key: The more prepared you are, the less room there is for anxiety to creep in. Know your material inside and out, practice until you can recite it in your sleep, and anticipate potential questions or curveballs. If you know your niche, practice the same speech for different audiences until you become an expert.?
  2. Focus on Breathing: When those nerves start to kick in, take a moment to focus on your breathing. Deep, slow breaths can help calm your nerves and centre your mind. Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds.
  3. Visualise Success: Instead of dwelling on what could go wrong, visualise yourself succeeding. Picture yourself confidently delivering your presentation, engaging your audience, and receiving applause at the end. Visualisation can be a powerful tool for boosting confidence and reducing anxiety.
  4. Shift Your Focus: Instead of focusing on yourself and your nerves, focus on your audience. Remember they're there to hear what you say, not judge your every move. Focus on connecting with them, sharing valuable insights, and delivering your message effectively.
  5. Embrace Imperfection: Accept that it's okay to have off days. Nobody is perfect, and even the most seasoned speakers have moments of uncertainty. Instead of beating yourself up over small mistakes or slip-ups, focus on what you can learn from them and how you can improve for next time.

So, next time you feel faint or go blank on stage, remember these tips to help you turn those nerves into confidence. And always remember: it's okay to be nervous, but don't let it hold you back from shining bright. I've also learnt over time that it's okay to be vulnerable.

Even if your voice is shaky, you don't feel too good but want to share – do it anyway. The more you practice, the more confidence will naturally come.?

Here's to conquering stage anxiety and delivering killer presentations like a pro! Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

Thanks for these professional insights - speaking 1-2 secs slower than usual when on stage can be beneficial to avoid colliding words and also ‘hold’ your audience, speak to be heard and understood not rushed to finish. And, enjoy ??
