Though I've never watched the film "Failure to launch", I certainly have seen a pattern over the years for why automation and AI projects fail to get off the ground.

As a leader, it's frustrating when a new project fails to launch despite senior leadership being bought in. What's often overlooked is the resistance to change among the staff. Even if the leadership is on board, if the workforce is not, this can lead to delays, stop-and-starts, a lack of commitment, and eventually the stalling of the project.

At times, managerial and process owner staff may fail to attend scheduled workshops. They may see them as a low priority, feel threatened by them due to the impact on their bonus or budget, or feel that they might get replaced. These factors can cause resistance to change, leading to the failure of the project.

The key to overcoming this resistance to change is to educate staff on the benefits and capabilities of the technology. Having the right conversations with HR and other stakeholder groups can make the process much smoother. The first few steps into change are always met with the most resistance, so it's important to be prepared for this and take steps to mitigate it.
