Overcoming Receiver Barriers for Effective Communication
Ready Set Present
Whether you are designing a new presentation or improving an existing program, our website has everything you will need.
Effective communication relies not only on the sender but also on the receiver's ability to interpret and process information accurately. Various factors, including assumptions, attitudes, and sensitivity issues, can create barriers to effective communication.
As a receiver, you may unconsciously filter or disregard certain aspects—or even the entirety—of a message. This may occur if the information appears unimportant, overly complex, or difficult to comprehend. Additionally, selective attention can hinder communication. For instance, if you perceive the sender as redundant or unengaging, you may disengage after just a few words, allowing your mind to wander.
Distractions and personal preoccupations can further contribute to communication breakdowns. Prior experiences with the sender may also influence your receptiveness. If you have previously found the individual’s messages to lack clarity or relevance, you might dismiss their input entirely. Furthermore, rather than actively listening, you may find yourself preoccupied with formulating a response or anticipating when to interject.
By recognizing these potential barriers, both senders and receivers can work toward more effective and meaningful communication.
