Feeling a little anxious is normal. Here are some strategies to help you manage the transition back to work with confidence and ease:
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
It's completely normal to feel a little off after a break, especially when you've had time to unwind. Recognizing your feelings of anxiety without judgment is the first step. By accepting that it's okay to feel this way, you're already on your way to overcoming the emotional hurdle.
2. Start with Small, Manageable Tasks
After a few days or weeks of relaxation, jumping straight into a heavy workload can feel daunting. Instead of diving into the most complex projects first, begin with smaller, easier tasks that you can complete quickly. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and help build momentum as you ease into your regular work routine.
3. Plan Your Day – and Your Week
Taking control of your schedule is a powerful way to combat anxiety. Set clear, achievable goals for the day, and break them down into smaller, manageable steps. This approach helps you stay focused and prevents feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, planning your week ahead will give you a roadmap for the tasks that need to be done, reducing stress and making you feel more in control.
4. Reconnect with Your Team
If you’ve been away for a while, take the time to check in with your colleagues. Reconnecting and sharing a light conversation about your time off can help ease you back into the workplace. It’s also a great way to align yourself with ongoing projects, update yourself on any changes, and reinforce a sense of community within your team.

5. Practice Self-Care and Mindfulness
Self-care should remain a priority even as you return to your busy work schedule. Make time for a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day, whether it's stretching, meditation, or a brisk walk. Practicing mindfulness throughout your day can also help you stay grounded and reduce stress. Throughout the day, taking small breaks, breathing exercises, and staying hydrated can make a big difference.
6. Set Boundaries
Sometimes, returning to work means feeling like there’s too much to do, too little time, and too many demands. Setting boundaries for yourself is crucial for managing stress and maintaining your mental well-being. Communicate your availability and limitations clearly, whether it’s with coworkers or managers. Prioritize tasks, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if needed.
7. Focus on the Positive
Instead of dwelling on the anxiety of getting back into the swing of things, try to focus on the positives that your work brings you. Is it the satisfaction of completing a project? The excitement of new opportunities? Your personal growth and learning? Embracing a positive mindset can change how you approach your return and help you see the opportunities for growth rather than the burdens.
8. Be Patient with Yourself & Others
The return to work may not be seamless, and that’s okay. Don’t expect to be 'back to normal' right away, and give yourself the grace to ease back into your routine. Over time, as you adjust and regain your work rhythm, the anxiety should fade, and you’ll feel more comfortable and confident in your role.
It’s normal to feel anxious after returning from a holiday break, but with the right strategies in place, you can transition back to work with ease and confidence. Recognize your feelings, take things one step at a time, and practice patience. Most importantly, remember that this period of adjustment is temporary, and soon, you'll feel more settled and in control of your work day once again.
