Overcoming the Pain Points of Networking and Connecting with New People

Networking. Just hearing the word is enough to make some people feel awkward, anxious, or even downright exhausted. It conjures up images of crowded rooms, superficial small talk, and exchanges that often feel forced. Yet, at its heart, networking isn’t about collecting business cards or having rehearsed elevator pitches—it’s about building authentic relationships that can transform your life and work.

Through my work, I’ve come to understand the common pain points people experience when it comes to networking and conversations. But here’s the good news: with the right mindset, strategies, and support, you can overcome these challenges and discover the joy and power of meaningful connections.

What Makes Networking Feel Difficult?

Many of the challenges people face with networking come down to three key pain points:

1. Awkwardness and Anxiety

Standing in a room full of strangers or starting a conversation out of the blue can feel intimidating. For many, the fear of rejection, self-doubt, or not knowing what to say can stop them from even trying.

I have witnessed people arriving late to an event, leaning against the wall scrolling their mobiles, heading for the bathroom , just to avoid that initial moment of connection.

I know more than 50% of any room, feel uncomfortable networking, and admit that I too have been guilty of these techniques when placed in a new situation. That is why, I am well suited to help my clients.

2. Superficial Interactions

Have you ever walked away from a networking event feeling like you spent the whole time talking about the weather or what you do, but nothing deeper? Superficial conversations leave people feeling drained and unfulfilled, as if their efforts didn’t lead to anything meaningful.

Understand that there are stages to move through to establish trusted relationships and achieve your outcomes, so relax a little and stop putting pressure on yourself to kick a goal on the night

I encourage, you to develop your listening skills and be curious.

Do not try to be the most interesting person in the room, rather, be interested and explore possible synergies, interests, and possibilities.

3. Not Knowing Where to Start

For some, the idea of networking feels overwhelming simply because they don’t know how to approach it. Where do you go? Who do you talk to? What’s the “right” way to network without coming across as pushy or insincere?

Why Networking Matters

It’s easy to see networking as something you “have” to do rather than something you “get” to do. But the truth is, you are just one conversation away from discovering new opportunities, forming valuable partnerships, or even changing your life.

When done with intention and authenticity, networking isn’t just about business—it’s about growth, learning, and contributing to something bigger than yourself. Every person you meet has wisdom, experience, or ideas that can inspire and challenge you. And you have the same to offer in return.
