A Journey from Seattle to Sitka: The Making of an Entrepreneur

Ral’s story begins in Seattle, where she was born and raised in an Alaska tourism family business. This early exposure to the industry laid the foundation for her future endeavors. In 1980, she moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, to take on the role of Director of Marketing for a tour company. A year later, she transitioned to Anchorage, where her entrepreneurial journey truly began.

Starting a small marketing consulting and advertising business specializing in tourism, Ral soon met her husband, John. Together, they embarked on a new venture—renting condos in Hawaii for Alaskans. Thanks to Ral’s experience in tourism, they quickly expanded the business into a full-service tour company, packaging air, accommodations, and rental cars. Their company, Hawaiian Vacations, grew significantly, eventually chartering wide-body jets to provide air travel between Alaska and Hawaii. Under their leadership, the company reached 8-digit annual revenues before they sold it to Alaska Airlines in 2008.

Ral recalls, “Keep in mind we started with NOTHING—it was totally bootstrapped. It took us decades, tens of thousands of dollars, and thousands of hours to learn the lessons that enabled John and me to grow the business, hand over the day-to-day management to a management team, and then exit the business with a profitable sale to Alaska Airlines.”
