overcoming obstacles

overcoming obstacles

What did you do this weekend? I made the 11 and ? mile trek to Hollow Top lake. Yes this was June 15th and yes the lake is really still frozen. It was a cool, literally, a cool adventure. I started up with me and Stewie, my trusty dog. Two miles in and what do we get to? A creek crossing with freezing cold water. It was almost 3 feet deep. Do we turn around, nope. I take off my boots, stuff my socks in, and then attempt to throw them to the other side. Boot 1, not a problem. It landed successfully. Boot 2, not so good. It bounced off a tree, the sock came out, and my boot fell in the water. Luckily the boot hung up on a stick, but the sock washed away. Well, carry on. Stewie, not a swimmer, wanted no part. So I picked him up and carried him through the creek barefoot to the other side. I then recovered the both boots. Luckily having a little experience I had another pair of socks, just in case some crazy incident like this happened. So we suited up and continued on our mission. Another mile into the hike, we see the “bear”. He was just hanging out munching on the trail. We let him be for a bit until he wandered off out of sight. From there it should have been clear sailing to the lake. I was not expecting 2 to 3 feet of snow on the trail in mid-June. We made it that far so we decided to persevere and stay on course. Sometimes walking on top of the snow, but other times sinking in pretty deep. We did arrive and got to see quite a backdrop. Unfortunately the lake was still frozen, but still pretty damn awesome.

At Port X we always talk about creating an experience and overcoming obstacles. For me the mountains provide a truly amazing experience and allow you to come back and realize we humans, can do some pretty amazing shit! It puts everything in full perspective for handling the driver that called in sick, the container the was put into the rail pile instead of diverted, or a slightly difficult conversation that may need to be had. We never lose sight of the experience for our customer and we always want it to be an awesome encounter that ends with "my pleasure". You have something difficult that needs to be done? Our line is, “we got this!”

I also lost a hiking shoe this year at a creek crossing but mine never came back! Nature teaches us the best lessons in life!
