Overcoming Nursing's Triple Challenge: Burnout, Shortages, Value

In a world where nurses make up over 50% of the global healthcare workforce, why are we still fighting for recognition, fair compensation, and basic respect that we have a right to?

Three months into my nursing career, I've witnessed a crisis that threatens not just our profession, but the very foundation of healthcare. At 2 AM today, we resuscitated a patient who nearly died because they didn't trust nurses' expertise. This isn't an isolated incident – it's a symptom of a larger problem.

The Triple Threat Effect

We're facing a triple threat that could lead to potentially fatal mistakes, mass exodus from the profession, and a healthcare system teetering on the precipice of collapse:

  1. Undervaluation of our skills
  2. Overwhelming workloads
  3. Personal burnout

How long can we sustain this pressure before something breaks?

Dr. Himadri Bisht and Dr. Snehasish Ghosh eloquently brought to light the lack of recognition nurses face in society. They raised poignant questions:

"Why does the term 'nurse' conjure an image of a female staff member?

Why, after four years of extensive training, are many nurses limited to patient care roles?

Why does the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers specify qualifications for doctors and specialists but not nurses?

Why are nurses treated as second-class citizens?"

This was after they noted the kind of treatment nurses in India are facing on a daily basis. Now, imagine what the condition is like in our beloved country Nigeria.

This emphasizes the urgency of our situation. If we don't act, nursing as we know it now could become a lost cause - it could go into extinction.

I really don't think we are ready to face these uncomfortable truths.

The Nurse Advantage

Just because we have these challenges lurking around us doesn't mean we should give up out of fear or frustration. On the contrary, it's time to recognize and capitalize on our unique strengths.

Society may underestimate us, but they don't know what we know: We possess one of the most powerful skill sets on the planet. Just think about it:

  • How do we manage to stay calm when others panic?
  • Why do we think critically when others are confused?
  • Who else shows compassion when the world turns bleak?

These aren't just nursing skills – they're invaluable assets for conquering life itself.

But here's the priceless question: Are you using these skills to their full potential? In your life?

It's time to make good use of what you have to get what you deserve:

1. Diagnose your life

Use your assessment skills on yourself.

Identify your stressors, strengths, and growth areas.

Create a nursing care plan, in this case, a life care plan for your own success.

2. Administer self-care

You know how to care for others – now care for yourself with the same intensity.

With the empathy and love you extend to your patients even when they underrate you, extend it inwards too.

Your well-being is not optional; it's critical.

3. Spread your influence

Start a blog, mentor others, speak at conferences.

Your voice matters – use it to elevate our profession and inspire change.

Every time you doubt yourself, every time you feel overwhelmed, remember who you really are.

You are a NURSE – you're unstoppable.

Oh, what incredible changes you would make if you applied your nursing skills to your personal life!

So, I challenge you:

Take your nursing skills and unleash them on the world.

Your patients need you. Your profession needs you. And the world needs what only you can give.

Will you join me in redefining what it means to be a nurse in 2024 and beyond?
