Overcoming the 'Never Enough' Mindset: Transform Self-Doubt into Unshakable Confidence

I’ve been reflecting on those moments when, no matter how hard I worked or how much I achieved, it just didn’t feel like enough. Sound familiar?

Today, I want to share a bit about my journey with self-doubt—because getting through it is possible.

The Realisation That Sparked Change

As a coach, I’ve encountered countless clients who, like me, reached a point where they were utterly drained, wondering why their efforts felt so meaningless and no one truly recognised the hard work I was putting in.

At my lowest and my loneliest, I also had a realisation, that the answer wasn’t just working harder, harder than I had worked before, well because I had no energy left in the tank; I needed a fresh approach focused.

Celebrating Small Wins That Make a Big Impact

One of the first shifts I made was to start acknowledging my accomplishments.

It sounds simple, but it was harder than I expected. I remember how refreshing it felt to update my CV at a low point, which led to a moment of, “Oh yeah, I’m pretty good!” Revisiting my past work and achievements provided tangible evidence of the progress I’d made. I often encourage my clients to start a success journal—sounds grand but actually super simple: notice and jot down small victories, moments of satisfaction and maybe even praise.

They consistently report back on how this practice elevates their mood, shifts their perception, and brings rare moments of joy back into their work. Turning

Ambitious Dreams into Achievable Goals

I’ve always been one for big dreams, but I realised there’s a fine line between ambition and overwhelm.

Setting goals wasn’t my strong suit, but I had to get real about it. I started breaking down my big, lofty ideas into smaller, actionable steps. This approach made the seemingly impossible feel manageable.

It’s not about doing everything at once, but about making steady, achievable progress. And when my inner critic pipes up, I can point to those completed tasks - my business is proof that I’m moving forward—my clients feel this shift too.

Kindness is a Game Changer

We’re often our toughest critics, holding ourselves to impossible standards and feeling like we can’t stop. Sound familiar? Learning to be kinder to myself was a game-changer.

It felt unnatural and I felt guilty too, but with time, that resistance faded. Small acts of self-compassion made a huge difference. If you’re struggling with this, I’ve shared some tips you can download here.

Letting Go to Grow

Delegating was another area where I had to grow. I used to think I had to do everything myself, perhaps because I wanted to be seen as a pivotal person. But holding onto everything left me tired, grumpy, and unfulfilled and nothing like the rescuing hero I had assumed.

Trusting my team, handing over responsibilities, and seeing their skills as complementary rather than threatening was a huge shift for me. It not only reduced my stress but also fostered a more collaborative environment—and yes, I proved to myself that I could let go.

Well-Being as a Strength, Not a Luxury

For the longest time, I saw well-being as just another item on my to-do list. That changed when I started viewing it as a fundamental strength.

Setting boundaries, prioritising my well-being, and letting go of guilt became essential. It’s not about achieving perfect balance; it’s about recognising that taking care of yourself is a key part of being successful.

I exercise now, not to be thin, but because it grounds me and when I am grounded me, my family and my business thrive. As leaders, we need to model this for our teams and families—being kind to ourselves is part of that.

Investing in Yourself: Why It’s Worth Every Penny

Investing in my growth was crucial. Seeking out leadership development and coaching opportunities allowed me to enhance my skills and lead with greater confidence.

It’s an investment that pays off in both career success and personal well-being. I encourage you to find opportunities for growth, whether it’s through coaching, training, or simply setting aside time for reflection, it's never a waste.
