Life is full of detours—those unexpected, unplanned events that disrupt our carefully laid plans and force us onto a path we never wanted to take. Sometimes, these detours feel like inconveniences; other times, they are life-altering. Whether it’s a career setback, a personal challenge, financial loss, or the devastating loss of a loved one, these moments test our resolve, our faith, our strength, and even our belief in ourselves.
I know what it feels like to face a detour so overwhelming that you question if you’ll ever find your way again. When I lost my wife, Maleka, in a tragic accident during what was supposed to be a celebration of our 15th wedding anniversary, my world stopped. As a result of the accident, I also had to adapt to the reality that I had to have my left leg amputated in order to still survive.? My plans, my identity, and my sense of control were shattered. Suddenly, I was thrust onto a road I never expected—a journey of grief, brokenness, recovery, and rediscovery.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that detours don’t mean the journey is over. They are opportunities to grow, learn, and discover strengths you didn’t know you had. That’s what resilience is all about; not avoiding the detours but learning how to navigate them with purpose and determination.
The ROADMAP to Resilience
In my keynote speech The ROADMAP to Resilience, I outline seven guiding principles to help individuals and organizations move from surviving to thriving. This was the framework that helped me rebuild my life after unimaginable loss. Here’s how these principles can apply when life takes you on an unexpected detour:
Restoration
Restoration isn’t about regaining what was lost; it’s about reshaping what remains. After Maleka’s passing, I had to redefine what my life would look like without her. Restoration requires rest—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s essential for healing.
Reflection for You: What does restoration look like in your life? Are you allowing yourself the time and space to heal?
Obsession
Resilience requires a laser-like focus on what matters most. For me, that focus became my son, Cameron. I was obsessed with ensuring he felt loved, supported, and safe, even as I navigated my own grief. This obsession gave me purpose and direction.
Reflection for You: What is the one goal or passion that fuels you? Channel your energy into what truly matters and let it drive your next steps.
Acceptance
Denial is the enemy of acceptance, which is needed before progress begins. Acceptance isn’t about liking or agreeing with what has happened; it’s about acknowledging your reality so you can move forward. For a long time, I fought against the idea of life without Maleka. But once I accepted it, I could begin the work of rebuilding.
Reflection for You: What are you in denial about? Embracing your current reality is the first step to reclaiming your power.
Discipline
Resilience demands discipline. There were days when grief made it hard to get out of bed, but discipline kept me going. I made a commitment to show up for myself and my son, even when I didn’t feel like it. Discipline creates momentum, and momentum creates progress.
Reflection for You: In what areas of your life do you need more discipline to create positive change? Take small, consistent steps daily.

Motivation
Motivation is the fuel that powers resilience. For me, it was bigger than myself—my son needed me to show up, to be strong, and to guide him through our shared grief. Your motivation must be rooted in something meaningful to sustain you during difficult times.
Reflection for You: What is your "why"? Who or what inspires you to keep pushing forward? Let that motivation propel you.
Attitude
Your attitude shapes your journey. After my accident, I could have let bitterness consume me, but I chose gratitude instead—gratitude for the life I shared with Maleka and for the opportunity to rebuild. A positive attitude doesn’t eliminate challenges, but it makes them more manageable.
Reflection for You: Can you shift your mindset to embrace resilience? The way you think determines how you move forward.
Process
Every transformation begins with a process. After my accident, I had to relearn how to walk, rebuild my routines, and rediscover my identity. Resilience isn’t an overnight fix; it’s a step-by-step journey. Trusting the process was key to my recovery and growth.
Reflection for You: Are you clear on the process for the transformation you desire? Take time to map out the steps that will lead to your goals.
Your Detour Is Not the End
Resilience isn’t about avoiding detours—it’s about navigating them with intention and purpose. The ROADMAP to Resilience helped me transform my pain into progress, and it can do the same for you. Whether you’re facing personal loss, professional setbacks, or unexpected life changes, these principles offer a clear path forward.
Remember: Detours may slow you down, but they also have the power to teach you, refine you, and set you on a course you never imagined.
