I've always prided myself on being a rational thinker, but I came to realize that my mind was often clouded by a form of "defensive thinking." This inner critic, constantly questioning and doubting, was a relentless adversary. My journey towards overcoming this began with acknowledging its presence, understanding that these thoughts were not reflections of reality, but distortions born from fear and past experiences.

Therapy was my first step towards healing. It was there that I learned about the power of the mind and its patterns. My therapist helped me recognize the defensive mechanisms I had built over the years. These sessions were like peeling back layers, revealing the raw and vulnerable truths beneath. It wasn't easy facing these realities, but it was necessary.

In addition to therapy, I turned to meditation. In the silence and stillness, I confronted my inner critic head-on. Meditation taught me the art of mindfulness – being fully present in the moment, observing my thoughts without judgment. This practice slowly chipped away at the walls I had built, allowing me to see the world and myself more clearly.

As you stand before the vast ocean of life's challenges, remember that within you lies the strength to overcome the waves of doubt and embrace a future filled with peace and clarity.

Reading played a crucial role in my journey. Books on psychology, philosophy, and personal development opened new doors of understanding. They provided me with different perspectives and tools to understand and manage my defensive thinking. Each page was a step towards enlightenment, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of myself.

Throughout this journey, there were moments of profound insight. These were flashes of clarity, where I understood the patterns of my mind and how they influenced my perception of reality. Recognizing these patterns was empowering; it gave me control over them, rather than being controlled by them.

As I continued this path, my self-image began to evolve. I started seeing myself not as a prisoner of my thoughts but as someone capable of change and growth. This healthier self-image was pivotal in my healing. It allowed me to approach life with more confidence and less fear, embracing who I was and who I could become.

The concept of living in the present moment became the cornerstone of my healing. It taught me the value of authenticity and being true to myself. Living in the now, free from the shackles of past regrets and future anxieties, was liberating. It was in this space that I found true peace and happiness.

In ACA we call this the Critical Inner Parent. Its job is to protect you but, unfortunately, it also takes away the realization of your potential. As you’ve discovered though, its power is not absolute.
