You've secured a job! But wait - what's that nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach? It’s imposter syndrome, and guess what? You’re not alone.
The Imposter Syndrome Struggle
Imposter syndrome—the persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of competence—is a common phenomenon, especially among new graduates.
You might think, “I don’t belong here,” or “They’ll realise I’m not as skilled as they thought.” But let me tell you a secret: almost everyone experiences it.
Why Does Imposter Syndrome Strike?
Coping Strategies
1. Acknowledge It
?? The first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is acknowledging it. Remind yourself that feeling like a fraud doesn’t mean you are one. You wouldn't have been hired if you weren't right for the job.
2. Talk About It
??? Share your feelings with a mentor, a colleague, or even your pet goldfish. Verbalising your fears reduces their power.
3. Track Your Wins
?? Keep a “Wins Journal.” Write down every achievement, no matter how small. Celebrate them. (Also - this will help in your performance review meetings, trust us ??)
4. Learn and Adapt
?? Embrace the learning curve. Your first job won’t be perfect - you'll make mistakes and that’s okay. Learn, adapt, and grow.
5. Remember: You’re Not Alone
?? Reach out to the University of Portsmouth Alumni network, attend industry events, and connect with fellow graduates. You’ll realise everyone’s navigating the same choppy waters.
6. Practise some self-compassion
?? You’re not expected to know everything on day one. Your degree is a foundation, not a finished product. Be kind to yourself. Self-compassion is your secret weapon against imposter syndrome.
Final Thoughts
You’re not an imposter - you’re a work-in-progress. We all are!
Embrace the uncertainty, learn from mistakes, and keep that curious spirit alive. Your journey has just begun, and the best chapters are yet to be written.
