Overcoming Identity Crisis.

Overcoming Identity Crisis.

Dear You,

Have you ever met these categories of individuals?

  1. Funmi, who is an executive in a cooperate career and whenever she's asked the question " Who are you?" , the answer that flows out of her mouth is " I am the executive director of Bawa group, a multinational company".

Maybe you can't relate to this kind of Bola.

What about this one?

2. Emeka who is an undergraduate in the university, a second class upper student and whenever asked about who he is, the very first thing that came to mind is defining himself as "I was told when I was younger that I am not smart, so I'm not a smart person but artistic".

You still haven't met one of those two, what about this one?

3. Faith who is a mother of two children, a stay at home mom, a wife to her husband.

When asked a question about who she is without her role as a wife and mom " She hasn't given it much thought".

In a world where there's a lot of identity distortion and you see individuals projecting who they are not either privately or publicly, I can say boldly that how far a man will go in life is directly linked to images of his/her future self that the individual can capture which is a reflection of their identity.

What does the word 'Identity' mean?

According to Cambridge Dictionary, Identity is defined as a person's name and other facts about who they are.

It is also known as a state of being or feeling that you are a particular type of person and the qualities that makes a person different from others.

Here are 6 critical thoughts about identity that will save you greatly in this decade:

1. Your identity is not your position at work or your course of study.

Your position as general manager is great but that isn't who you are at the core of your being.

You have to be able to sit down and truly ask yourself questions like:

"who am I?", "What are my likes and dislikes?", "what are my strengths and weaknesses?" "what motivates you?" "What are your values?" "What are you passionate about?"

By sitting down with these questions, you will get to see that it's only a portion of who you are that you may be able to unveil that way bringing me to the next critical information about identity that you need to keep in mind.

2. Only two people get to tell you who you are.

God and you.

You didn't create yourself, you have a manufacturer who is God.

When you buy a new phone, usually it will come with a manual to tell you all you need to know about the specifications and how to operate it.

You are God's product and he wrote your manual, so definitely he will be able to tell you more about yourself than anyone else.

Even the future version of you in ten to twenty years time, can be unveiled by him.

Jeremiah 1 vs 5 says " I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you prophet to the nations."

Psalms 139 which is my favorite part of the bible, is one you should definitely go love up on.

3. God speaks in a language known as general and specific identity.

General Identity stems from what the scriptures says about you as a child of God.

1st peter 2 vs 9 is a great place to start unveiling the general.

For specifics, as you spend time with Jesus in the word and prayer, he will begin to unveil dimensions of identity that are specific to only you per time (Names that he calls only you).

He will even unveil scriptures that carry your name on them.

For me, when I started to ask him questions about my identity, he started to say to me " You are a woman of innovation, creativity and excellence, you are a woman of power, courage and boldness."

He even said you are going to be called the Anointed Animator because I will anoint you over that craft and lots more.

So go sit with him to get your own specifics.

4. It lies greatly on you to identify with your identity.

When God starts to unveil your identity to you, you may not look like it yet but don't doubt him.

It's okay if you struggle initially to belief he's going to make you into that sort of person, you are human and your mind may not be able to comprehend how it will happen yet.

Lately, I was having the conversation with the Holy-Spirit and he began to show me that Moses as a prototype also struggled to accept who God has called him to be.

You can check out Exodus chapter 3 and 4.

See,

God speaks from realms higher than you and he knows your ending and beginning.

If you can't even trust yourself, borrow God's confidence about you.

Trust him and align with it ,he will bring everything to pass.

He won't unveil everything at once, most times, he will unveil to you in part but as time passes, it becomes clearer.

5. When God starts to unveil you to you, start calling yourself that name and start showing up that way.

It's called showing up like your future self.

If he calls you royalty, start dressing and showing up like a king or queen that you are.

It has to enter your mind before it enters your life.

In fact, you may have to craft your bio on social media to be what he has said about you.

Don't forget, it is also time to start building yourself with tools, skillset, knowledge and the mindset you need to carry to truly become that person.

For every prophetic word you receive about your identity and future, the first question to ask is "what manner of man/woman must I become to unlock this?"

Often times, God tells you who you are and you don't ask him what must you begin to do to manifest that dimension.

Ask God questions. God isn't afraid of your questions, he invites it.

6. In the journey to uncovering your identity according to heaven's design, don't ever let men, culture, social media, agendas, define who you are.

Dr. Cindy Trimm says it this way "only you reserve the right to define and redefine yourself however you see fit''.

Shut out other voices speaking against who God calls you.

People are going to say so many things either as superiors at work, colleagues, friends, family and so on, pls keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and what he has told you about you.

The journey to unveiling your identity isn't a short and quick one, it's a lifetime journey with the holy spirit.

This is the message the holy spirit will have me deliver to you today. If you are struggling with identity crisis due to comparison. Ask him to help you.

It's a conversation I will be treating on another day as God will have me.

You can reach out if you want to talk about it.
