Overcoming fear
Russell Dalgleish
Scottish Serial Entrepreneur, Investor and Entrepreneur in Residence
With spring now finally with us in Scotland, I feel very fortunate to have been able to bring up my family in stunning Scotland. I am blessed indeed to be surrounded by such natural beauty, world-renowned historical assets and a broad range of life-enhancing activities at my fingertips.
But it's also too easy to take all this for granted and to allow the pressures of the entrepreneurial career to weigh me down. We can all find ourselves listening to the voice in our head which seems to block out all "beauty of the possible" and instead tell us "what won't work".
Have you heard that voice?
A friend of mine once told me, with great clarity, that before any speaking gig she engages in a conversation with that negative inner voice which tells her "your not good enough", "they won't like you", "your not prepared".....
And how does she call up the bravery to overcome these negative thoughts?
Simple.
She imagines her inner voice to speak with the voice of a small, cute mouse! I absolutley loved this, just try it :)
One of the great challenges of our life is to overcome fear; fear of failure, fear of the unknown, and even fear of success.
The first step is to accept that fear is a natural reaction to a new experience. Then we must analyse what we are fearful of and then "Do it anyway" as Richard Branson so eloquently puts it.
It sounds so easy, it feels so difficult but to be successful there is no way round about this step.
But you don't have to face all your fears at once. And as you overcome each fear sit back and appreciate the feeling. This will make it easier next time until you don't notice the fear at all.
Here's to a fearless week ahead.

The Week Ahead
This week I am going to split my time between Glasgow, London and Galway in Ireland.
My trip to Galway is to attend the latest gathering of the Interceltic Business Forum which meets to identify new opportunities for collaboration between companies based in the Celtic nations of Brittany, Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, Cumbria, the Isle of Man, Cape Breton Island, Galicia, Asturias, Acadia, and the Celtic diaspora.
The Business forum came about through a concept launched at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient and as proved a superb initiative for creating new cross-border opportunities in Europe and across the world.
You can read more about the conference here https://www.intercelticforum.com/

7 个月Well, I was born in bangor north wales, raised a Royal Airforce base brat, been lucky to live all over UK, even spent time in Northern ireland before the peace agreement, also been lucky to live at RAF mcrihanishis, where paul and linda mcartney used to fly into the base, to go to their scottish gaff, and the pair of them would be making cups of tea for the RAF staff while waiting for their flights ect. Then married Mr Hydro group (aka the loch ness monster,) only joking, he must have been forced to do some of the stuff he was wiring up, as he is not tthat smart. But now living in birkenhead, the young people here if your not from a 2 invcome household, they are used as drug mules...so many young talented lives wasted, I know im not in scotland, and this is not just a birkenhead issue, its almost every city in the uk that has this issiue, would be great to develop something to change this....And give these young people a chance at buiding a great life, without them running round killing each other. Ect. You are a product of your environment and i was very lucky to be an RAF base brat, but the young people where i am now exposed to all kinds, and its breaks my heart everyday that these young lifes and potential is wasted.
